I finally got my diff out and on the workbench. The d/s side yoke was missing the C-clip, and the p/s side yoke had 0.075" side play. I replaced both, and now there is 0.025" play. Is this acceptable?
I was originally going to replace my crown and pinion gears. For some reason, I thought half of one of the teeth was missing. The only damage I can see is the chip in the following picture. Is this acceptable, or should I replace the gears?
I already bought a new 3.70 set and full rebuild kit.
Other than possibly by chomping up your missing C clip, the most llikely way to get that chip would be by dropping the gear when it was out. Perhaps even when it was built in the first place. It has probably been that way a long time.
Thanks, I thought it would be okay, but since I already have the spare set, I wanted to be sure.
I'll bet the C-clip was not installed when it was rebuilt last year. The guy who rebuilt it asked me if I wanted them in, and said they weren't needed. I told him to put them in anyways.

We don't have C clips. WE use snap rings. C lips use a recess machined into the axle gears.
Anyway the tooth pattern shouldn't touch that area. If everything else looks good reuse the gear.
If it magnaglows OK, you should dress the gear with a pencil grinder. Be careful not to get it too hot when grinding. You don't want any rough edges where a crack might start and grow.
