Default Boiling radiator

Hi,

I’ve just bought an '88 Vette and have a problem with the temperature in city traffic. At normal driving the temp is around 183°, but as soon as I stop at a redlight it goes up at an alarming rate, well over 210°.

I've looked around a bit and found an aftermarket sensor which activates the fan at 194° instead of 224°, which the manufacturer claims is the temperature at which the original sensor activates the fan.

It sounds quite high – I’m concerned enough when it reaches 210°. So far I’ve never caught the fan in action.

Is it true that the cooling fan starts at 224°.

/Jakob

I'm thinking about installing a toggle switch hooked to the fan for city traffic.

Our cars are designed to run hot, you can get an aftermarket fan switch and run a 160 degree thermostat.

Being that you just bought the car, you'll probably want to check in between the radiators - I'm sure you'll find all kinds of leaves and debris. Also check your coolant.

Never caught the fan in action? Simply warm up the car, let it sit in your driveway (with the hood open) and take note of when (if) the fan comes on. You might have a problem....

Mine happily sits at around 210 no issues, it is within range of what you should expect.

Your temps are fine, no need to worry till you get around the 240 and up mark.

My '88 factory fan settings are:
Main Fan starts @ 228 degrees.
Aux Fan starts @ 238 degrees.
Give or take a degree
no need to worry till you get around the 240 and up mark
Over 240, start worrying
