Hello all.... I recently just purchased my first vette 93 6spd black/black 42K miles car was in mint condition. I have been reading the forum for sometime and all the temp threads have caught my attention. I know the car has been well taken care of with regular oil changes. The only things (that I know of) that have been changed from stock are the vette has been lowered and a hyper chip has been installed. My concern is (and not being a mechanic) that the car seems to run hot....

95* humid South Dakota weather with a/c on...

80-85 MPH 1 1/2 hours on the road

Oil temp 225-230*
Coolant - 200- 220*
Engine 210-215*

Stop and go traffice the engine temp climbs around the 230+*

Should I be concerned? I really enjoy my first vette and all the head turns I get!!! But want to make sure I amdoing everything possible to make this car last for awhile!!

Other questions .... opionons on flushing the tranny fliud and coolant system?

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Everything looks pretty normal to me, I would have the coolant changed if you don't know when it was last done, as a preventative measure. When the temp gets to about 230, your fan should kick on, and the temp steadily go down. Were you at the Black Hills Classic last weekend-if you missed this year, be sure to catch next, it was a blast!

Where from in South Dakota? Brookings here! Temps seem normal however I would pull the radiator, straighten the fins, and add some new coolant and those temps should drop a little more. The C4 vette is notorious for storing all sorts of goodies around the radiator and needs a bath to get it all out of there. I rarely see temps above 200 degrees but I also have a 160 degree thermostat. The thermostat is an altogether old thread on the forum and has been debated to death as to whether it helps or not. To me it works so no debate from me. Add a fan switch to help those times when you want to adjust the temps yourself and you are good to go but I do see that you have a hypertech chip so that possibly is helping to keep the temps down by turning on the fan earlier in the ECM. As far as the tranny I had mine flushed when I first got it and had no problems. I recently had tranny work done and had a full flush and replaced my filter and some other assorted parts so in a nutshell some on the forum approve of the flush and others would suggest to go the full route and replace the filter and flush all new fluid into the torque converter as well. Welcome to the forum and enjoy! The tech tips section here has some great info and everyone here is very helpful!

Welcome aboard As for cooling issues check in the "Tech Tip" section for a paper on how to clean the plenum of your car. The C4 sucks up a lot of road trash and it gets into the plenum and blocks the airflow to the radiator. It is a safe bet that your car (and all C4s) needs to have this done.

Default Thanks for the help!

I will try to get some pictures in the next few days....

Went to checkers today to check on a 160* Tstat. There were saying that the hypertech kit is the best way to go? You get everything including the relay. Any suggestion or objections? I am assuming that this Tstat change out is any easy task and pretty painless?

The temps seem juuuuust a little high. I was running through Arizona early last week in 112-116degree air temps at a steady 90-95mph and the coolant temp was steady at 197-198.
Where did your "Engine 210-215*" come from?

Here's my temps from a recent road trip around Vegas.

Left work today and took the Vette (96 LT1) on a road trip west of Las Vegas out near Death Valley. The AC was cold and the Vette handled great. Passed quite a few cars climbing through the mountain passes. Outside temps got as high as 129 degrees. Here's some temps I saw on the digital display with the AC on (Totally stock cooling system):

1. Inside cockpit temp before I started 151 degrees (Digital thermometer on the seat.)
2. Highway engine temp 70 to 80 MPH 205 - 215 degrees
3. Highway oil temp 70 to 80 MPH 220 - 235 degrees (Mobil 1)
4. Highway trans temp 70 to 80 MPH 220 - 225 degrees
5. Town (Slow traffic) engine temp in traffic 210 to 230 degrees
6. Town (Slow traffic) oil temp 225 - 239 degrees
7. Town (Slow traffic) trans temp 220 - 230 degrees
