Not sure in AZ, but in TX, here's how it works.

Buy the car. Take it to your insurance agent and get it insured. Take your insurance papers to the inspection facility and get it smogged. Take all that to the tax office and get plates.

Once you get your plates, you renew them annually through the mail with no need to show proof of smog check. You can continue to renew your plates year after year, unencumbered by the smog *****.

Now....the state inspection facilities are private companies here. Some of them have, shall we say, employees who are less than scrupulous. A little networking among the gearheads will bring forth those who are sympathetic to the hotrodder's cause.

Where there's a will, there's a way.

Of course, you could always buy a second vette of similar vintage and have it smogged and transfer the sticker and plates to your hotrod. Wait a month, claim they were stolen, and get duplicates for the legal car. Keep the hotrod legitimately insured. Unless you do something stupid that attracts Johnny Law Dog, it will never become an issue.

I present the previous info for argument's sake. I don't recommend you actually TRY any of the above suggestions. Breaking the law is immoral

Breaking the law is immoral? Are you talking about the House or the Senate?
