I have always loved the look of the C3s and have been thinkin about getting a 1979-1981 Vette. I know that they are heavier, slower, and don't handle as well. But they look so damn cool and are carburated, the chassis will take a big block, and there are lots of aftermarket performance parts..

I think the fastback sharks from '78 to '82 are among the most beautiful bodies ever dropped on an automotive chassis. If they don't ooze Pure Sex, I don't know what does.
The C3 is nowhere near the car that the C4 is, in many respects. But don't let that slow you down. You can tweak the C3 to suit your own tastes. I'd love to have one. I say, "Go for it!!!"
C3s are awesome. I like the look of the pre-1978s better just because they don't have such accentuated fender flares and exaggerated chin spoiler - the cleaner (at least in my opinion, it's cleaner) look of the 68-77s are my fav C3s.
[Edit] Either way they have such cool high-rise fenders that scream classic Vette! Good choice if you decide to go for it!

I am 6'3" 245 so I need a little room! I will try the fit of an older C3 again, I remember hitting the rear window in them when I was in high-school.
The reason I am looking at the carburated cars is, I still have a 1970 LS6 and a bunch of spares from my high school street racing days, and who knows I might pop it in a C3. Obviously my C4 runs to good and has been too damn reliable to be my project car!

I am changing to a Grand Sport.
Here is something I have always wanted to do though:
My last Corvette was a 1981 that some previous owner had made into a convertible using 1975 body parts. It was triple black and looked real good as it appeared to have been done professionally.
I would like to do that with a Collector 82. It would have a 383 with a Tremec tranny and a Steeroid rack and pinion. Coil overs, widened stock wheels and a stock interior. I would also keep the paint scheme stock and include an L88 hood.
Your idea sounds like a great one to me. They are really cool looking Vetts.
I'm trying to save money to do a little head work to my 95 with a streetable cam, LTs & stock exhaust. I'll keep the 3.07 for milage (its a dd) but I'll have a bit more grunt through the curve.
I had a 63/327/4sp, a new 69/427/4sp and a used 72/454/auto that I modded with mild fender flairs, front spolier, edlebrock manifold, Holly, and some chrome goodies. I'd love to have any one of them but of course in the same condition as when I owned them. That said, I still wanna keep my 92.

DAMN STRAIGHT!! If I didn't live in California, I would have bought a 79-81 right off the bat and dropped a badass carb'd motor in it, with a 700R4 and redone the suspension, and put some nice Corbeau Seats in it and called it a day...but alas, living in California, the best vette I can afford is a C4.
If I decide to move on to a C5, I might get my *** Corvette taxed all the way to hobo land because they have too many other features/sensors that operate the car, unlike an 85-89 TPI Vette. From what I see, OBD2 electronics are a bitch to work on/diagnose. I already know much more about my TPI that I'd rather stick with my 89. I did make the Honda Civic to Corvette change so I think that my new/older C4 Corvette is enough for now. :
I'd say in the next 2 years, I shall be a C5 owner as well. :
Where's the "All gens" option?
I plan on keeping my '86 as long as I possibly can... and unless I'm in dire straits I'd like to make it a track car should it no longer be my daily driver (read: I'll have gotten another vette).
I am not moving down or making any lateral moves, but I will restore a 74R next, red/red, black top and hardtop.
Just sold a 79 L82, silver on oyster with 52K original miles on it. Brought it back up, it was neglected most of it's life, sitting in a warehouse in KC.
I will be back to home base tomorrow, will post a picture.
I will keep the ZR1, only 16,455 miles on it, and very good condition. Only reason to sell would be to a 93 Z.
I will say, that the ZR1 owners are a very dedicated group. I will stick around.
