Default Update!!!

C'mon, SteveJG - yo've left us hangin' here. We hope you've solved the problem and we want to hear what it was.

Running normal on the drive - stopping for a bit - then running hot after re-start . . . . combined with draining only a small amount of water lead me to suspect a leak at first (hose, radiator, whatever). Not being able to refill very much liquid converted me to a clogged radiator.

I have an inquiring mind, and you know what they say about those . . . !

Sorry!! I really havnt had time, I since got the right gasket and was just about to replace it with the new T stat but I got a call and had to go into work. **** happened, and now its late. I will have this done hopefully tommrrow, but I'm going away for the weekend

I did have time to throw the old thermostat on the stove in a pot of water. At boiling (we all know this is 212), the thing opened. This makes me beleive that it might have been ok, and I probably have a blocked radiator.

Actually, listen to this. When I took the T stat elbow off, I had to remove a small hose that went into the throttle body. When I took it off, it was bone dry, and had rust particles inside it. Should coolant be flowing through this?

It was really hot today and while sitting in traffic mine got to 208. That worried me some. I was thinking about what temp I should look for today.

What year Rover do you own?

I had a similar problem with my '95 Disco...if I had enough airflow, I would not overheat, ran normal, but any kind of idling would push it over the edge. It turned out to be a clogged radiator. Radiators dont clog fully, usually they will still alow some coolant to pass through some of the pipes in them but not all. Had my radiator rodded out and it never overheated again. The fact that barely any coolant came out and it didnt take much to fill it makes me believe the radiator is clogged. I had drained and refilled my radiator a few times on my disco as I changed the front timing cover gasket but I never put the full amount of coolant in it till I had the radiator rodded out...

what year is yours? the later ones are designed to run hotter. 208 in traffic is nothing for an LT1. If you were seeing 240 or above then you should worry but my LT1 normally sits around 190-195 cruising and 200-210 if I have been sitting with the A/C on (fans on)

Default over heating

ok first off dont use that damn gasketon the stat, i have build many an engine and NEVER use that on a sbc just put some right stuff on the water neck drop the stat into the intake and bolt it down easy brezy

second if a seal is dead in the water pup you will know just pressureize the system --you can rent a pump at autozone its just a hand pump and you put it on the radiator in place of the cap-- there is qa weep hole in water pumps it is like 1/4" in diameter you will see fluid draining out if your pump is dead the weep hole is sraight above or below the impeller shaft

also your stat waiting to open till 212 is indicative of a problem there, i always use a 160 stat but i am carbd' so use a 180

the fan on my car was dead when i started it up the first time, all i did was spray some wd 40 on it and wala. to check if the fans relay or wiring is dead just unplug the fan and run a ground and hot from the batt if it fires right up moveing tons of air great all good just a relay/wiring issue but if its slow try wd-40

also that pressure flush system that shucks is offering is well worth the money, try it and you can use it to check your water pump at the same time as you flush the system out just be carefull and dont prssureize with more than about 25 psi

best o luck

UPDATE

finally got the thermostat on today when I had time. I fired it up, and it sounds like shes running on 5 cylinders. My exhaust has always been so loose to the point where it sounds like the valves are exploding, but I know its my exhaust because if I put my foot on the tailpipe thats left it stops rattling(Shes beat) So that makes it hard to hear anything over the rattling exhaust. It is idiling very low, only about 4-500 RPM's on startup. Also, the voltage indicator is going crazy, saying its drawing 11.7 volts and thats in the red. The engine is blowing lots of blue smoke right above the headers, which is was doing when it overheated. My only idea for the blue smoke is that the headers warped at 270 degrees. There is no white smoke out the (pipe) and the oil looks good. Its impossible to check the coolant, because when I got it, it was black in color, and its still loaded up with what looks like soot.

ANY MORE IDEAS? IVE RUN OUT

I think it's time for you to enlist the help of a good diagnostician. It sounds as though you've got some serious issues there, and trying to untangle all of this via the web is just not happening for you. Is there a Corvette specialist in the area that you can trust to dig into this for you?

Be well,

SJW
