Open the hood and see if they both work properly, and then manually open or shut them by using the **** on the motor. You may have a relay problem (the three relays on the frt driverside fenderwell.)
No, should have plenty of power if it starts. Opening the hood checks to make sure nothing is catching the headlamp asm.. I'm assuming you're working on the 86, and the **** is on the bottom of the headlamp motor, close to the lip of the hood. You may have to disconect the motor conector to test it, becaue it may try to turn on its own.
I had a problem similar to this on my 86. When turning the headlights on they would both come up, but when turning them off they would stay up. The **** is on top of the motor and is tappered with slots in them. These are there in case you go out one night and the headlight don't come up. A saftey feature to manually open the headlight lids. I replaced all three relays I bought off ebay for $20 and they work properly now.
Probanly, change the three relays around and see if the problem changes. Don't worry about the "tar" on the relay connectors, that's just the normal sealant. Mark the relays 1,2,3, so you know where you started.
Before going out and buying relays, open your hood. With the lights closed you can see the headlight capsules. Inboard of the headlight capsule is the motor. Reach down toward the front edge of the hood and under the motor is the ****. With the headlight switch on try turning the ****. Sometimes a dirty contact in the motor is preventing the motor from turning. Helping it turn may cause the motor to suddenly operate and open the headlight. Turn the **** in the direction which causes the headlight to open. If the motor suddenly starts turning it will usually spin in your fingers so fast it may be a little alarming. Instead of holding the **** I try to spin it with one finger. Let me know what happens. It's too much to explain the operation right now.
