The C5 is a different car, it's not better but it is very different. I like them both very much. A C4 feels more like a go kart and is more fun to drive. The C5 is more refined and it's easier to live with everyday. The horsepower advantage the C5 has over most C4's is really no big deal unless you're going to leave the car stock. Right now the C5 prices make them one hell of a bargain but you need to drive both and then decide. The C4 is lightyears ahead of the C3 but many people prefer the C3. Depends on what you want and what you're going to do with the car. The C5 is better in many ways, is it better looking ? To some it is to some it isn't. Go drive both and if you buy a nice C4-C5 you'll be happy either way, lots of car for the money.

A C5 feel more like a daily driver to me. If I were buying a Vette for a daily driver it would be a C5. However, for weekend drives, I like the sportscar feel of a C4. Just my $.02. Oh, and the price is better.

Last year my wife bought me my 92 LT-1 ZF-6 speed Coupe. Stock except for ZR-1 wheels with GS-D3's and a hurst and exhaust... wait it's stock, honest.

Anyway this year she said for my birthday she'll let me buy a C5, 50th ann 2003. Anyway I've been looking and having a great dealer like Morrisons down the road I went and test drove a really nice 2002 vert with all the bells and whistles. 6 speed. I did a nice long curvy road ride. My thoughts were first the trunk gives you a good amount of room. As much as my 92 coupe? Not even close the 92 has way more room. What I thought I liked about the C5 being easier to get into now I think I like the C4 better, yes it's harder to get over the sill but I appreciate it for that difficulty, it's personality. I felt the C5 was soft, not very sporty. The 6 speed did not shift anywhere as well as my ZF. The clutch in the C5 was rough, had some vibration. Any way after the ride I took my C4 down the same roads. Back to back the C5 does not compare at all to my C4. The C4 really handles much better, smoother through the curves but with a rougher feel, if you know what I mean. I think a good bit is having new ZR-1 size GS-D3's on the C4 but the C4 was a much truer sports car and after all that's why I bought the vette. About the only thing I like in retrospec is the stereo and the CD changer that the C5 had. As far as looks, the C5, looks pretty good, almost as good as my C4. Looks like I'll be spending some money on and keeping the C4.

I've driven C3s, 4s ,5s and 1 new C6 last summer....now that car was IMPRESSIVE! OTOH as I'm way to cheap to put $55-$60K in a car the bargain basement pricing of C4s looks good, too.

Ultimately it is up to you and what you like. I just purchased my second C4, a '94 LT1 coupe and was very impressed with how much better it rode and handled compared to the pristine, low mileage '87 C4 drop top I had. Enjoy! DFO
The C4 isn't even close to the C5, I don't even know where to begin. And as far as looks, the C4 has to be the worst looking Vette ever. Talk about the "ugly sister". Sorry, but you asked.

Some of you are just brutal

I have owned all three generations and currently have a C4 Coupe and a C6 Vert

All three generations are nice representations of the breed. The C6 took the best of the C4 and the C5 blended it together and out it came.

We all tend to gravitate towards what we have. I can be somewhat unbiased have had all three and still owning two of them. Be happy that you are blessed to own ANY corvette. Personally i enjoyed my C4 vert more than my C5 Coupe. I enjoyed my C5 Z06 more than either of them and i enjoy my C6 Vert more than the C5 Z06. I will probably always have a C4 because it was my dream car growing up in the 80's and 90's and i have an emotional attachment to them. Objectively though they get better as the years go on.

Just enjoy what ya have. None of them are Sh*t cars

I'm not bashing C4's. The guy was asking about which car he should buy, the C4 or the C5. It's not a fair comparison. One guy is telling to to drive them and see which he likes better. Which one do you think he'll like better? That's like comparing a C5 to a C6. Just common sense, not bashing.

I dont get it either. Everyone has their preferences and reasons for buying, but its the same damn car, what gives? There are things I like and dislike about EVERY generation.
As if a cheaper/older vette would make one inferior, GMAB.

The sitgma of the Corvette owner lives on Im afraid.

everyone here knows that the C5 is an improvement over the C4 as far as the tech side of things, thats the way it should be,right ? just like the C6 is improved over the C5.some people like the C4s ride and handling better, thats their opinion.looks are subjective though, and calling the different generations ugly and all that, well, (the post previous wasnt meant for you specifically)

if you like a good feeling sports car and not a over weight pig you will like the c4 and the money you save you can build a c4 that is a lot faster than a c5. c5=i rather look cool than have a sports car. kinda like a guy that buys a porsche turbo but cant drive for crap. also c5's have wiring problems just as bad if not worse then the last few years of c4's. and c5 owners are ****** never wave and always think they are better than c4 guys. but with all of this aside i would love to own a c5 z06 or a c6 z06 and always rember it is just a car they come and go and they do not make you any better than any one else

Judged as a "car", the C5 is better. It should be, it's a design that is 15 years newer.

The rule around here is: "buy the newest C4 you can afford". That rule also applies to DD Corvettes of any year: if you want a driver, buy the newest Corvette you can afford.

On C4 general, if people to post that the C5 is ugly, it's just their opinion. If someone posts that the C4 is ugly, it's bashing. Kind of like the OJ jury. Depends on your perspective. Besides, the original poster wasn't asking about the looks of both cars, but about the performance and design of the cars, and the answer to that question is easy.

I like the C1, C2, C3, and C5. But that's just me. The C4 just doesn't do it for me, but neither does the C6, I will let it rest at that.

The problem here is you purposely came over to C4 general to slam our
cars. I have some very strong opinions about the C5 however I would not post them in C5 general because I have common sense, something you are lacking. The cars are not all that different, they are both impractical as hell, won't hold anything, ride like **** compared to a normal car and run 13 second 1/4's box stock. Everyone wants to race you when you drive one and the similarities go on and on.

Don't make it so complicated. The original question is simple, should I buy a C4 or C5?
