When ever my car sits for a week or so especially if the weather is cold or it has been raining, when I go to start it I turn the key and get nothing, the battery is good less then a year old and everything else seems to be working fine, once it starts it runs beautifully. But sometimes I need to turn the key off and on at least 5-6 times before it will crank..once it cranks it fires right up..I am thinking the starter has reached the end of it's life. by the way it's a 95 6-speed, with 80 plus thousand on it.

That's exactly what happened to me this summer... I checked the battery connections, the starter connections, etc... Once I got it started, it started again and again as I needed it to... After the car sat, several times again with the key before it would start...
No problems since I replaced the starter...
BTW, Pep Boys has units rebuilt by Bosch... Seems like a high quality unit to me and about 1/4 the price of what GM wanted to charge me for a Delco unit at the parts counter...
The root problem is very likely the solenoid. It is possible to rebuild a solenoid or to change one but the safest move is to swap out the complete starter.
I agree with all. My symptoms were same, not even a click. Lots of troubleshooting and wound up right back at the starter.
Personally I don’t do solenoids anymore, I like to just change the whole starter and be done with it basically for ever. My luck was bad with solenoids, ended up putting a starter in soon after anyway.

believe it or not, toyota carries the parts to bebuild the solenoid for about 20 bucks. there is also a guy on ebay who sells the parts. all you have to do is send him an email and he will send you the right parts. I've used him and my starter hasn't failed ever since the fix. Mine started out as a clicking noise and no start...like this click click start...and progressively moved to click click click click etc etc. Mine is a 96 a4 and the starter comes out pretty easily without removing exhaust or anything else. It looks like it won't , but turn it the right way and it's out. The whole process took me about 2 hours because I wanted to clean everything up real nice. really simple to do.

I got the same issue - actually I'll turn the key and get the dreaded "click click click" battery is good, plenty of juice but the solenoid just will not kick in.
Any how I just called Pep Boys - on my 95 - no starters stocked - special order only - $229.00 bucks not exactly 1/4 the GM price of $450.02. I found is special order at Advance - for $118.00 with a life time warranty. AutoZone doesn't have it either but a special order of 2 to 3 days vice Advance Auto's 1 day. NAPA - nada either special order.
What's up with this - the 350 is the most common block out there by GM - are they telling me that the starters are all different? I can't believe that - what I wish for is some guy to do a nice big book on cross referencing ALL the common parts across GM makes and models.I know that chevy must be pulling from a common parts bin.
Pls try to email this guy. Most of the problems are not the starter, but the solenoid. the part is like 5 bucks. 30k miles ago, i had the same problem. Changed the contacts in the solenoid..still works like new.
I'm not affiliated with this ebay post..i have just ordered the parts at one time or another. Beats buying a starter and basically it's takes about the same amount of time...You can prob. do it in 20 minutes after the starter is out. good luck
