The e-brake cable on my 87 has stretched. The light comes on when I hit a bump, push down on the brake handle and it goes out. When the brake is applied, doesn't seem to do a lot. I asked what a local repair shop would charge to do it... about $450-$500, for all 3 sections.
I question whether the left and right cable actually stretch, or is it just the front cable that stretches? Anyone have experience there?
How big of a job is this to do?
I can always ignore it, or try to.
I just got done replacing the e-brake cables on my 86, after all that work I pulled the handle and nothing, WTF . I then removed the discs and found out the 'cam' thing that the cable attaches to was seized and would not pivot and push the shoes out when the cable was pulled. I had to remove the bearings and this allowed access to the parking brake assembly. I removed the bearing because I sure as the hell do not know how to get the springs back on the shoes with them in place, much easier to have the upper and lower springs clipped in and then put the shoes on and lock them with the 'T' spring. Then the bearing can be put back in and the complete assembly mounted.
I got the cam working again by putting it in a vise and working it back and forth, I also lubricated it so rust would lock it up again. This happened on both sides. Got everything back together and it works like a charm, still need to tighten the cable a little, bit as mentioned earlier I might cycle the handle and see if that does anything.
Inside the assembly is an adjuster that works the wheel just like drum brakes. So I guess it does automatically adjust when you pull the handle.
As for the cost of the cables search ebay that is where I got all three new for a very good price. As for stretching that is kind of possible, there is an adjuster under the car that you can try to tighten and see if that helps or do as mentioned in the linked post and cycle the e-brake ~50 times, but none of that helped me, I disassembled the entire thing and went over it all. It was not that bad of a job, just an all day project and I packed two lunches. Let me know if you have any questions.
