After a few months of being down for the count, the vette runs again. This problem whooped my azz
I spent in excess of 40 hours diagnosing and rewiring the entire ignition system to discover the MSD spark/retard box was the problem.
Took it for it's first drive since the fall. Registration renewed, state inspection and emmisions exemption and it is legal once again.
Anyhow, glad to be back
Makes me wonder about MSD. What is it about MSD that makes them fail so often? All I hear at the track is this: "Does anyone have a spare MSD 7? We have a racer in need!"

I hear that at least once a day at the track.
After having 3 ignition boxes fail(msd 6al's) and now this, I am officially done with msd. I am not uspet or bitter about it, but I have had enough.
I am sure they made a good product at one time, but I agree that their failure rates are too high.

Well, don't know about the new ones but the last car that I worked on,
(69) Chevelle the box was made by Seagate.
It had wires going everywhere and the car never did quite run right.
Really Pete, Job well done. Troubleshooting is not my specialty. Then again , not too many things ARE my specialty.
Thanks Tommy,
Although I am the trans guy, I had quite a bit of electonics training. Both in High school, and later in life. I was installing alams, remote starters and every other gadget under the sun for quite a few years. There is nothing electric or electronic on a c4 that scares me, but this problem whooped me.
That is why the satisfaction is so high on this one.
Pete: Can you write up the problems you were having... I feel this info would be very useful for all out there with MSD 6AL's, me being one.. Mine seems to be working fine NOW, but from all i've been reading, there's no guarantee to how long it will last... The info would be much appreciated
vinnie

I have never heard that one
I honestly did not want to sound like I was bashing MSD. I am not thrilled with them, but not angry either.
I am pleased that the last msd item that was in my car, is now out of the car.

I know things can be obvious after the fact but as far as the this particular troubleshooting process is concerned, if you had to do it over again, would there be anything you would have done differently to save some of that time?
after replacing 2 MSD 6a boxes and 3 blaster 2 coils on my 94 Impala SS (all under warantee because they didnt last more than 30 days) I know to check the MSD if the car cranks and doesnt turn over. At least I was fortunate enough that I always left the stock ignition in the car so I could always just plug in the stocker when the MSD failed
