The other day I drove home about 100 miles with air on and my engine temp stayed at about 200 210, I stopped at the store to get a soda and it climbed to 220 sitting at idle, the air temp was around 80 and i was cruising between 60 and 75 mph.
Is this normal it seemed a bit high to me, I checked the coolant level, elect fan, made sure the rad was clean in front, ect. I picked up a new t-stat but have not had a chance to install yet, driving in town on short trips everything was normal 190 195. I read on a search that maybe it is missing a center deflector or lower spoiler, is this a possibility?
I will change the T-stat and rad cap tomorrow but I don't think they are the problem but maybe.
I have a 1985 stock, that I purchased last summer.
If you want to test your car, allow it to continuously idle and see how high the temps will climb. The car idling at 220 is fine and it was designed to idle at this temperature. I believe the fan kicks on at 228 and you will hear it when it does go on. Simply park and idle it on a sunny day and watch the temp gauge. There's absolutely no need to change the T-stat as it seems that everything is working as it should.
Sounds perfectly normal. It should actually keep climbing up until 228 when the fan comes on.
If the car is running at 195ish on the freeway, the tstat is fine. So changing it won't reduce your hot idle temps.
I have a lower temp stat in my 85 to keep the temps down, but it only keeps it down about 10 degrees. If you're worried about hot temps you can get the kit to turn the fan on sooner or install an auxiliary fan (B4P option).
Well it sounds like it is normal then. I am used to vehicles staying at the t-stat temp but if the fan comes on at 228 then it isn't going to stay at 190.
If anybody has a picture of the spoilers underneath send it to me so I can see what I am probably missing.
