Default Engine Numbers - 1985 C4 - HELP!!

Hi All,

I'm frustrated enough to the point where my last chance is to post a questions, I tried an online search, I tried searching this forums, so If I'm asking a repeated question I'm sorry....

Please can someone tell me where and how to find the engine codes on a 1985 vette - auto - coupe...

I've heard that there are numbers at the back of the block - (how the bloody hell to I get at them), and numbers on the front - (which side and behind what).... Any photos would be great and photo's with instruction even better....

Cheers

Shayne

As stated at the right front.Look at the front of the head and then look at the bottom edge of the head..You should see a small pad, this is the block and theres the numbers.

You can't see the pad without removing the a/c compressor. It's right above the left side water pump bolts. There are also some raised numbers in the side of the block itself that you can ID.

The stamp pad is the key though.

Anyways what are you trying to identify? 85 had only one engine option.

You can also ID the heads, typically under the oil fill hole.

Not a good shot, but that lower left arrow is the area you need to check. It's flush with the block surface where the head goes, in front of the passenger side head. That opening just to the right of the arrow is the water pump port, the little hole above that the upper bolt. You'll probably have to remove the a/c compressor + bracket as one piece. This requires removing the accululator, removing the black bracket from the a/c to the header bolt, removing tensioner, and removing 2 nuts that hold it to the water pump studs. You also may need to remove the fuel lines from the rail to move it all far forward enough to see this number.

... that's the best shot I've ever seen. I'm going to go out this weekend and try and clean it off (again ). At first, I was afraid the OP was another NCRS person (we also have to worry about the numbers). The NCRS judges actually use those fancy scopes to see them.
