I made a post from when i first bought the car and its shape. and my plans to paint it. Well it took a lot longer to finish then i anticipated. Well first off there was 6 layers of old paint from numerous resprays that i didn't account for lol. And as if sanding it 6 layers wasn't bad enough after i layed my base and stuff my compressor died half way through i was annoyed and stripped all my stuff of and restarted it from scratch. More sanding and painting, not impressed and very time consuming with working and just having a baby. Well this time i rented a booth and was very happy with the out come. Thought i would post pictures for all to see Comment are welcomed. Remeber im not a pro have not worked in a body shop its all self thought from trial and error so be kind and the car is not wetsanded. I think i did enuff sanding lol On with the pics
this is when i first brought it home. Some one had given up on the old girl, there was lots of repairs done newalthorns etc with only 180 klm i see light through the clouds i bought it for 4 grand just needed front tires for a safty.
Looks like you did a really nice job. I like the painted belt molding. You should be proud.
If I ever repaint my 87, I'll paint the beltline to match the body. But I won't do the work, I'll pay to have it done. Doing a job this big yourself, and having it come out right is outstanding. Well done.
to sand i used a orbital with a 80 grit at first since i had so many layers and then i bumped up in grits to feather the sand scratchs out some 120 220 then prime. I took it as far as the old factory sealer. I did break through in a few places but todays high build primer is really good stuff so it wasnt an isue for me. I painted the belt to match i just thought new paint and a dull belting would look bad IMO im very proud of my efforts since i did every aspect of it my self it came out great. Im fairly new to body work but not to spraying, have been doing it for a little while i have a 700 paint gun so i got nice equipment and have good spray experience.
Strip the clearcoat on the wheels, wet sand them and polish to perfection. Or get a set of chrome ZR1 style wheels. Nice work.
I have just had the curb rash taken care of on a set of 84 Corvette wheels. The clear coat is peeling in a couple of spots, and the area below the wheel weight is discolored.
How did you strip the clear coat?
What did you do after stripping the clear?
Do you leave it without clearing?
Very intersted in learning more on what works. Any before and after images?
I must say you car looks fantastic. I talked with a body shop about my car. It has two coats of paint on it. They said not to media blast it. Do not use chemical strippers on the body. They would start with with 150 to 180 grit sand paper to remove the paint.
What color is the car? Base coat / clear?
What did you have to do for painting the bumpers? Flex additive?
