Could be quite a few things. But I would start with testing the rocker switch that switches from left to right mirrors, then work your way to the joystick checking for power. This will require removal of the center console, that's not too hard, and seems like the easiest place to start. My 86 had the same problem with both mirrors being intermitent, but that was a poor contact on my fuse holder.Good luck.
I had the same problem, but it was the motor in the mirror. One of the gears was froze up. I removed the glass and manually unfroze the gear and oiled it with WD40 and it worked fine afterward.

Yes, it just pops back on. Just be gentle. When you reinstall, just press in the middle of the mirror glass. When you remove the glass, it will be evident how to put it back on. No Big Deal. The little gear was just froze on mine - it would go left/right but not up/down. I just rolled the gear between my thumb and forefinger to free it up, then added a little WD40. Try it, it's a quick and easy test.
