It would appear that there is really no historical racing significance to the fender hash marks, except for being original equipment on the 96 cars.
They seem to have first appeared on the 004 car after a restoration done in the 1980s.

Interestingly the cobra's lateral hood/fender stripe kind of resembles hash marks when viewed from the side

Re-install when you sell it.
My personal opinion that blue and red combo maybe rare, maybe has lotsa heritage, but it is NOT pretty by comparison to other color combos.
Ask 100 people on the street what looks best. My bet is the vast majority would say NO HASH MARKS !!!!
