May be kinda hard to get to the bottom of this. My uncle owns a 1994 has always run great. Today he was driving about 35 mph and the car just quit, like it run out of gas. First thing he thought was fuel filter, it had never been changed. Said he could start the car and try to go, but it would just die again. So he changed filter and now the car wont start at all. Said he can hear the fuel pump coming on. He lives in another city so and talking to him on the phone trying to help him out. If anyone has any other ideas or has had this problem please let me know. Thanks
he also said when it did and does start, the check engine light is not on, so guess no codes.

Cruising @ 45 when ck eng light came on and engine stopped dead.
Waited couple of minutes restarted ran for a minute then stopped again.
In my case no fuel pump pulsations could be heard.
Towed it in, my mechanic's best shot that its the fuel pump. 141K miles on that bad boy. It gave it's best. Incidently, my mechanic says new fuel pump will not warranty without a fuel filter change too.

My guess is the fuel pump. Just because you may hear it does not mean that it is creating enough pressure to deliver the fuel. Put a pressure gage on the fuel line, crank the engine and read the pressure. If it is the pump, it is most important that you replace it with an OEM as the aftermarkets are not built to the same specs as the OEMs, that is why they are cheaper and fail fairly fast. Best thing about changing the fuel pump on the C4 is that it lifts directly out of the fuel tank at the filler area. Just remember to note the direction of the "pick up sock" so that you reinstall it correctly. Check for threads in the forum on replacing the pump. Also, let us know what the problem was.
okay he had it looked at and they do beleive it is the fuel pump. Called a mechanic, was gonna have it done. Was told it would be atleast 500 dollars cause fo the extensive labor involved, pulling gas tank out of car, etc, etc. figure u can figure it out. lol I do know the fuel pump pulls out of the top of the tank, question is, he said he has a full tank of gas and am not real sure if he needs to empty tank or not. Couldnt find threads on the exact way to do it.
Apparently your mechanic has no idea either. Labor should be minimal as the whole assembly lifts right out of the top of the tank. Remove the rubber bib around the fuel fill and you will see how it comes out in a matter of a few minutes. No need to drain the tank and be sure to replace the 'sock' around the pickup when you change the pump. I am guessing someone already did the diagnostics to be sure it is a bad pump and not just a relay or sensor issue?

Fuel pump can be changed in 30 min and tank does not need to be removed
Tell him to run as fast as possible from this clown

Run Forest Run!!
FYI - Pump only runs for 2 seconds when key is first turned on. When you leave the key on with the engine not running you will not hear the pump because its not runing. At least connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail (valve) to get some real data. Pressure should be about 35-40 pounds if fuel pump runs for the 2 seconds. If there is pressure, its probably not the pump.
Well after talking to him today and letting him know what all you great people have told me, apparently the mechanic is just assuming, lol, that it is the fuel pump. Didnt take a pressure reading. Told him to get the pressure checked first to make sure. Also told me the mechanic told him not sure if thats it, but $500 and no guarantee it will fix the problem. Told them exactly what to do. RUN RUN RUN lol Will keep posted on what happens with pressure check and will get back with anymore questions. Thanks for all the help
