Sounds like the indicator has slipped out of its snap in notch position. When I took my consul apart to wire up a new switch; I didnt snap the gear shift indicator back in place properly and it was reading in the wrong gear position. This may be your problem...remove the consul and look if the indicator is dislodged.
Someone will come along soon and tell you to search and also to buy an FSM
I won't, but unfortunately, I have no clue about what you need. I've never taken apart a Auto Shifter assembly. If I had I'd tell you where to start.
But thinking a bit, That Dial is just a dial and is in no way part of the actual shifting mechanism......You may have good luck of you just take loose the covers....
First, remove the center console compartment then you can get the part that covers the shifter off by removing those little black phillips all around it. You may find your answer there, just depends on how adventurous you feel right now.

You might try the tech forum. Over here it's mostly about what kind of wax to use or somebody forgot to wave. The guys over there have FSM's which is the Factory Service Manual. It can be quite helpful. I have a 1989 6 speed and have never owned a A4 Vette so no help here.
