Hi. New here and not sure if this should be in here or tech. I have had my 89 whitecoupe since last October. It appears to be mostly original paint. The other day I noticed what looks like black mold in the paint. It is on top of the panel in front of the headlights, also on top of the fenders at the base of the windshield and the extension behind the gas door on the rear deck. Only on the top surfaces, nothing on the sides. I have tried to wash it out and nothing. The paint is smooth to the touch, not pitted, It's not from luvbugs. I live in southwest Florida. I don't know if I was following a truck and got something on the car. Does the factory use primer before they paint these cars. I took the car to a paint supply house that I know and they had no Idea, only suggestion was to try and rub it out. waitng for a friend of mine to try and buff it out. Any ideas what it could be or on how to get rid of it?
Does it look chipped or below the surface level of the paint or above it? I have a couple small chips and road rash like that. I'm pretty sure the black coming through is the primer and not SMC.
I was thinking it might be the primer coming thru, one reason I didn't grab a buffer and go after it . The paint finish is smooth to the touch , no nicks or chips. When my friend gets back from vacation I'll let him look at it . he has 30 years experience as a paint and body men.
I had a 91 thunderbird supercoupe ,white with original paint and the paint was so thin you could see the primer under it.
It could be tar off the road, or a piece of a blow-out tire hit it. Definitely try a cleaner type product, tar remover, and/or clay first. If the paint were gone you'd feel some kind of ridge. Also black primer under white paint seems unlikely.
A lot of times cars get damaged by acid rain or you could have got overspray from something nearby, but you could feel these. Sometimes just rubbing isn't enough you need to wet sand with 1200 very fine paper and then rub. Could it have been there when you bought it but didn't notice it? Not everyone as a good paint booth to spray cars in. I seen dirt buried under clear before. If it were a metal car I've seen people who have fixed holes with filler instead of welding solid and water gets through from the back side.. I'd take it to a couple of body shops they'd tell what it take to fix it. Good luck
It's probably more gray than black and its speckled , kind of like someone shook pepper over it. It wasn't showing when I got the car, I had my friend check the car over and if it was there one of us would have see it. I'm wondering if it could have been covered up be one of those miracle products they brag up on TV and it's wearing off. I'm going to try a cleaner this weekend and possibly try and rub it out. Any suggestions on a cleaner.
I have some of this dark spotted crap on my white hood too. It just happened this spring. Maybe it's some kind of sap. I haven't had any luck with it yet. I've tried polishing it out and putting some cleaning chemicals to it also. The grease monkeys at my local shop got a hold of it too and left prints where they put their pushing palms. That's been a monster to get rid of too. I'm just glad mines not a show car or I'd be pizzed.
I still don't know what is in or on the paint, but it will rub out with compound. I guess it's time to buff the whole car. Been needing to get rid of all chicken scrathes in the paint anyway.
