Default HUH?

I keep hearring people talk about pre cats? I have a 94. I thought that the manifolds went to two cats then down to a resonator then to two mufflers...correct? Also....can you gut the cats on a 94 and not throw any codes? Is it loud? any losses? gains? i know sometimes backpressure is required.

The 86 - 89?? had a "pre cat" that was south of the headers. One on each side, then the pipes Y'ed in to the main cat, then Y'ed again out to each side of the car.
Give me a minute, and I'll show you a picture :)

The Mid America true dual 'Off Road' pipes and Borla mufflers. Sounds pretty good :)

I gutted mine, didn't cost me a thing. Well, a couple hours of my own labor. I cut the top half of the open, leaving a flap. I removed the cats and then welded the flap shut. No leaks, No codes, and I can hear my cam a little better. I don't have any track times or dyno numbers, but I had to do something about one cat because it was busted and knocking like crazy.

Well a bunch of L98 owners giving an answer to an LT1 owner probably doesn't help much. :) I'm unsure of your exhaust setup.

The 84-85 exhaust had no precat, only a main cat.
The 86-90 exhaust had two precats going into a main cat.
ZR-1s have no precats, only a resonator and a main cat.
LT1's have two small cats on each side that lead into the resonator.

correct me if im wrong.

I belive the ZR1 had a huge pre cat right off of each header. Maybe it's not a pre-cat, but there is definitely a huge round thing there.

Doesn't removing the catalyst send your O2 sensor berserk?

No that is the catalytic converter for the ZR-1. One on each side. There is no main cat for the ZR-1, just those two. In the first couple of years, they were actually part of the exhaust manifold, then they seperated them

The 02 sensor is ahead of the cats so you get no codes.

Yup, your 94 has two that look just like the ZR-1. You can get rid of them without any problems. It's only the 96 (95 also maybe?) cars that have 4 o2 sensors that get pissed if you remove the cats.

Correct, the '94 does not have precats. I have gutted mine in the past and there was a sound difference. I am still unsure on the performance gain on a relatively stock LT1 though. They do tend to pop with gutted cats because they will run richer. Best thing to do if you want to gut your cats is to find a racer freindly exhaust shop to make some "Test" pipes. (I know harder to do than to say.)
