Default Window Cleaning

My windshield is a pain in the a$$. I can never get it streak free. Without going nuts, Can you guys give me some suggestions on what products you use and do you use paper towels or newspaper etc?

Thanks in advance, Mike

Are you talking about the inside? or outside?

If inside, do you smoke in your car?
Do you use Armor All, or similar products on the top dash?

Smoking will leave a film that is very difficult to remove without streaking.
Those interior protectors are not much better either. And then of course, the plastic itself in your car will "out gass" and leave a film on the inside glass.

Oh, and if your using paper towels to do the cleaning, keep in mind that some brands are actually coated with something. You don't want to use those.

Newspaper does work pretty good (black print, no color pages).
Here is the cleaner I use, along with a clean dry cotton lint free cloth.

News print works well. Here is a tip. Contact your local newspaper company (the guys that print the paper) and ask if they have any roll ends on paper. Most do.

They will give you the paper with no printing on it. It is too small for them to use, but works good for packing material and cleaning glass.

Claybar the glass. Use a quality glass cleaner like Invisible Glass, and most importantly, clean microfiber towels. Wipe the cleaner off with one side, then flip the towel over for the final wipe.

I recommend Bon Ami for the exterior windows. That stuff is awsome! Just keep the powder, rag, and window wet at all times or it will streak and scratch. I use that stuff every time I clean my car.

I second the Invisible Glass. I used to save the microfiber towels for the body of my vette, but no more. A lot of paper towels do contain chemicals that will cause a streak.

Its funny this post should come up. We just got done washing both cars last weekend inside and out. Took the 89 out all day sunday.............

Its seems like no matter what we do the windows in both our vettes ( mainly inside) they are always streaked or foggy...dirty...what ever. Tried everything. Why is this?

The GM aerosol window cleaner works pretty well. I recently got a waffle-weave microfiber window towel that seems to help, too.

A supporting member was selling these little white paper towel like rags to clean your windows with here a while back. You just wet them and wipe. They work like magic. Top notch product. No gimmicks. Here it is:

If you used rain-x on the windshield the only way to get it to stop streaking when cleaned is to use denatured alcohol (Home Depot) to remove the glaze. It takes about 3 scrubbings to get it off, I then use Invisible Glass (Wallymart) and newspaper. My windshield is now streak free.

Yes they do!
My GF used to have a cleaning service. She thought I was crazy buying them. Well, she changed her tune when I showed her how good they do work!

I'm glad the link came up..... I'm ordering a few for Xmas presents.

To the original post.....
You may try cleaning the outside glass with Lacquer Thinner to remove any film of grease or oil the cleaners are not getting. Just don't get any on the paint! That'll be bad!!!

I just use Invisible Glass and a microfiber cloth. Works well on inside and out. I use an Eagle 1 interior detailer on everything inside, and it does a pretty good job of not mucking stuff up.
