Correct, the number of disks in the clutch pack can be increased for Hi-po apps.
Autos have wet clutches ; plates with linings on between steel plates in fluid
However these engage as one unit; the "extra "clutch can not be controlled seperately

What gears do you have now? what is 2nd peak?
I have 3.07 rear gears now. I' m not sure exactly where peak mph is in second, I just got the new rear end installed in the car in Nov. I took off work the weekend before the election to r&r the rears. Of course, it seems to be better gearing for autocross than the 2.59. When I have ran the courses I could usually top out in 1st and need just a little more or would be in the lower rpms in second.

I think I am being called out so...

An automatic trans uses the direct clutch and an overrunning clutch to hold the planetary gear set when starting in drive. If you place the gear selector in low, it ALSO applies the Low/Reverse clutch giving the transmission a better grip on the planetary gear set and reducing the chance for a transmission failure. This is also the clutch that applies when downshift to first causing the car to slow more quickly, unlike when you are in drive and the car coasts when you take your foot off the gas pedal.

If you would like more information on automatic transmission operation, please feel free to stop by my house and I can give you lessons on operaton and rebuilding of automatics. I am an Automotive Technology teacher and an ASE certified Master Automobile Technician. Class dismissed, let's go get a beer.

Could you make me a DVD and mail it? I'd love to rebuild my own next time. j/jk

Here's the parts pics from my last trans rebuild if anyone is interested.
