I have a 1996 corvette, the drivers door is not properly lined up, if the window is all the way up, is hits the window jam/frame. Also when the window is all the way down the door shuts rough. When I bought the vehicle a year ago I did not have this problem. Has anybody experienced this type of problem.
Most cars that have long doors will eventually start to drop in the back because of the weight. I just adjusted mine this weekend. If this is the problem it's not hard to fix. Remove the vent panel just behind the front tire and the brace in front of the door. This will get you access to the six bolts on the two hinges that hold the door. I used something to mark the frame at the hinges. You will need someone to help lift the door while you loosen the hinges and retighten. Only tighten 1 or 2 bolts untill you get the door right. It will most likely take several tries. Use the marks to estimate how much to adjust the door. You will also need to take into account the fitment of the door to the quarter panels front and rear. Once I got mine finished it shut better and fit better.
It's not your door alignment, it's your window upper stop. Your door aligns to the rear quarter, and barring an acident, it shouldn't change. In 91 or 92, they changed the window upper stop to a plastic "guide". Eventually it crushes and causes the window to pivot rearward when it is up all the way. This causes the window edge to hit the "B" piller moulding, and eventually rub the paint off of the "B" piller. It's still available at GM, about $20.
I have an early C4. When I bought it, the driver's door had dropped down so that it had to be slammed to close. Took it to the body shop, $50 later it was perfect.

Yes, the Tech Tip section is down it seems....hope they don't plan on charging for access to it in the future.

zr1fred, he said when the door is down it shuts hard is it possible the door has both problems? The window down shouldn't have any affect on the pillar, right?
Sorry, I meant when the window is down.

Reason: correction
Yeah, I adjusted both doors myself, pretty easy access to upper hindge with hood up just loosen bolts a little and I used a floor jack to lift door up and down.
just remember to wrap a cloth around the jack arm you dont want to scratch the door

To have the window hit the B pillar, the door would have to be so far out of adjustment it wouldn't close. Now he may also have a slight missalignment on the door due to worn hinges or an adjustment problem causing the "hard shutting". The proper adjustment is to hit the pin freely, and have the rear of the door to quarter panel gap be appox 3/16"-1/4" , and even all the way down top to bottom. The hood is then adjusted to the front of the door.
My dad used to get madder than hell if we slammed the doors. You could always push his shut with your little finger and barely here it click. Mine got a lot worse while I was adjusting it before I got it right. The pencil marks on the frame really helped.
