as for synthetic oil in a gen I or II chebby engine for most of us, its a double-time waste of $$.

I use the High Mileage Pennzoil in my 87. It has 168K and it seems to do just fine. I change oil 2 x a year at least, even if I dont drive it , like in the winter. Just good cheap insurance. Over the last year I put about 4,000 miles on my car. About what I expect this year.

I also change tranny fluid and filter once a year. More cheap insurance.

The manufacturers of Oil and Oil Filters have a lot to lose if they make a crappy product. One reason almost any oil will work as long as you keep factory specs in mind.

No matter what oil or filter you use, parts will unexpectedly give out and usually arent from oil issues. Mostly metal fatigue, poor castings, etc.

With my Vette that I now own, I use Mobil one which brings me to a question: how long can you go before ou change it, and if you change it, can you continue to use the same oil filter?

Since we are talking about oil, I have a 2001 Ford F150 Crew Cab, and I just started to add one quart of ATF with the oil change (it takes a total of 6 quarts). I used to do this with my old 1971 El Camino small block, and I was able to put almost 400,000 miles on it before I finally sold it. At 200,000, I had to have the head gasket replaced, and since the motor was never touched, I was fearing I would need a valve job etc. The Mechanic called me and wanted to know what I was doing to the motor since he did not have to anything else except replace the gasket. Valves and pistons were clean.

I'm probably not going to try this on the Vette since it's using Mobil 1, but if it was using conventional motor oil, I probably would.

I ran a 92 Cavalier 2.2L 447,000 miles

I DID RUN A 1990 CELEBRITY 3.1 V6 AT 506207 MILES ON ITS ORIGINAL ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION BEFORE O/D TRANNY REPLACEMENT ON MOBIL1 5W30 OIL CHANGE AT EVERY 5K... SO ANYBODY CAN COMPLAINT ABOUT GM NOW BUT GM ARE THE BEST ALL OVER LONG TERM DURABILITY AND RELIABLE VEHICULES ON THE ROAD...

How would ATF benefit the engine?

It's what the old hot rodders used. This was before they invented sea foam and other "rebuild your motor in a bottle" sh*t.

The longest running vehicle I have had was a 1984 Dodge Van with a 318 engine. I bought it with 100k, and supposidely the origional engine. It leaked a little, and burned a little (oil), but it was a work truck. Once a year, I would change the oil and filter with whatever was on sale. probably every 15k, if I had to guess. It was a work truck, so that was all the respect it received, and was lucky to have that.

Anyhow, around the time it had 200k, it leaked pretty good, and burned a bit more.
Once every 2-3 weeks, the lifters would clack, and the oil light would come on. I would pull over, and dump in a qt or 2. This continued until 440,000 miles when the body fell apart, and I drove it to the junkyard.
Between approx 200k and 440k, the drain plug was never removed, and I spun a new filter on every year or so.

What did this prove (to me) ?
2 Things:

1) I have zero respect for work trucks.
2) It does not take a whole lot to make an engine happy when it comes to oil.

Do I recommend the above? Absolutely not.
But it has proven to me that high dollar oil, filters and super strict maintenance is over rated.

Disclaimer:
I am not pushing my opinion on others, or debating. Just my experience over the years.

On my 87 vette, I change the oil and filter once a year (about 2000 miles)

Correct. I used to race go-karts in the 70's, and we got this one guy hooked on kart racing. We helped him with his kart, and he in turn shared some stuff on cars we did not know like the ATF.

I ran it in my 1971 ElCamino, and also in my first car: a VW bug. What was funny about the bug is it held almost 3 quarts of oil, so it was running on 2 quarts of regular oil and one quart of ATF. Never had an issue. The purpose of the ATF was to deep clean the inside of the motor preventing gunk build up over time. In both cars mentioned above, eventually you get to the point of changing your oil and its still somewhat golden in color. I know it sounds strange but it does work. I put a lot of miles on both of these cars, especially the El Camino. Too bad I sold it, but the body has so much rust damage due to living by the beach for 10 years. Motor was still going strong when I sold it.

In my 2001 Ford F150 Crew Cab, when I take it in for an oil change at Master Lube, the kids look at me like I'm nuts by adding ATF to the crankcase. Since the Ford takes 6 quarts of oil, I have them add only 5 and they pour in the additional quart with my AFT quart that I bring in.
