You know, things happen and it's sometimes just no ones fault. Yes, it's strange it happened right after the dealer changed the oil, but come on...it could have just been the oil pump and the engine seized...it happens.
How do you all know the dealer is responsible? Maybe it's just coincidence and the engine failed on its own - this type of thing does happen. The owner did drive the car 200 miles after it was serviced. I'm not so sure I would immediately blame the dealer, when all they did was an oil change and coolant flush.
This situation really sucks, besides the money to fix it which is bad enough. Losing the use of your car while all of this is being sorted out just makes a bad situation even worse. I wish you the best of luck and let us know how this all works out.
Yes it does suck. But side note i found a shop threw a good friend that will do a full rebuild on my lt1 to a 383 high perf stroker for 3500.00. That includes everything and i can have the car back in 10 days. He only builds small block chevys and said the engine will dyno at 425hp when hes done. My buddy tells me that hes only giving him this price cause hes a close friend and he gives him alot of work. Do these #'s sound right i dont know much about rebuilding engines.
I'm not a engine guy like so many others here on the forum so this comes from a novice. I have a guy that does some of my work and if he gave me that price I would be happy about it. I know I would get a top notch job and no corners cut and that's what you want so your not sorting out problems months from now. I know you don't want to spend any more than you need to but go for quality work above the lowest price. IF you need a rebuild I hope this guy can give you a good price and quality work.
Going threw my paperwork i just noticed that the dealer service sheet says they put in 6 quarts of oil my manual says that the lt1 takes 4.5 with filter change and 4 without the filter being replaced!

Thats not what my manual says. Mine says 6 quarts.
Love do you have an lt1? My manual sits in front of me now and i can read well, it says 4 with no filter change and 4.5 with the filter changed. I also searched these forum threds and everyone else complies with the 4.5. So what are talking about? The only other diff is the lt5 wich requires almost 8 quarts.
The oil dipstick is reading a good inch over the fill line. Just came back from the dealer they told me that they will have to discuss the matter with the big boss and they will call me in the morning. From what i can see there is definatly too much oil in my engine! My budy looked at it also he is a master tech at bmw and he said def overfilled.

It may be over filled, but I doubt that would have seized the engine...
an over filled engine (oil) is as bad as low oil. The crank whips the oil into foam/froth,leading to loss of oil pressure due to air/foam which the oil pump will not pick up. Never over fill. If the engine made a knocking sound, its a rod bearing/rod issue. Double knock is a piston pin issue.A loud screeching noise will be the crank wiping out the mains. Engines do NOT wear out because of age,,thats utter nonsense. How many modle T and A's you see out there(? )much less the 40,50 and 60s cars. Price for new motor/383 replacement is not bad and will run circles around the 350.

Ghost ryder finally someone who knows what there talking about. Ive don tons of research over the past week and found that an overfilled engine at times may be even worse than being low for the reasons you just mentioned. From 4.5 to 6 quarts were talking almost 40% more than needed. Going back and forth with the dealership they refuse to take any responsibility.
Unfortunately all you have now is a giant coincidence. The burden of proof is on you.
Your oil froth theory would have resulted in low pressure which is the driver's responsibility to detect. You should also have checked the dipstick after the service.
Really mk 82? First of all i have a service sheet that says they put in 6 quarts of oil the car takes 4-4.5 i think thats pretty good "proof". And its my responsibility to check the dipstick after a supposed professional serviced my car? Are you serious? Do you check a plumbers or electricians work when there done also? You hire a pro to do a pro job so you dont have to worry about it. You dont pat top dollar for a service to then baby sit them as they do it. Were not talking about a 19.95 special here. I paid 119.00 dollars for an oil change by mr. Goodwrench i dont think i should have to worry if they put in the right amount of oil.
I just read my owners manual and it clearly says 4.5 qt's of oil. it also says on page 6-11 NOTICE: Don't add to much oil. if your engine has so much oil that the oil level gets above the upper mark that shows the proper operating range, your engine could be damaged.
Id say you have a pretty clear cut case. Good luck!!!
You should def push this one as far as possible. Screw messing with the shop guys, call corporate! Get the head of the head guy and tell him what happened. Good luck!
