First 'Vette
And yes, it's a C4. My girlfriend shares her 87' C4, because I rebuilt the top end on the L98 for her and she said, I can consider it my car and I've driven it numerous times to work, etc, but it's just not the same, so I started 'Vette hunting in early December.I almost brought a C3 in the Bay Area, but after having it inspected, it needed $3k to $5k worth of repairs right off the bat and that seems to be the common consensus with the C3's. They all need something! Don't get me wrong, the C3's are beautiful, but everything about them is 60's or 70's technology (I test drove one too and it was a marshmallow car!). I've had plenty of experience with the C4, so I changed my mind and started looking for a 92-96 C4.
Good thing I ran into Doug Silver's ad as that was the RIGHT car. Low mileage, original owner, all the docs and just absolutely mint inside and out. I was looking for a blue or silver car. Maybe even white. I didn't exactly want polo green nor red. But the Torch Red was a real turn-on.
Never drove one until I test drove that one. Purchased it right on the spot. Then my girlfriend and I drove both C4's back up to the High Desert of SoCal at slightly more than legal speed.....
My impressions; Gawd, this is a bitchin' car! The handling is awesome. It only takes a flick of the wrist to change lanes. Had to watch the steering as it's light, but sensitive. Same with the gas pedal; the tires break loose easily! The interior is plush and superbly comfortable. Here I am, esconced in deep black leather and flying a C4 at 85+ up the ahem - "Off Road Test Track" (that's right, that's where I was!!!
).I cannot figure out, why you'd want more horsepower? The LT1 is incredible. It pulls totally hard through all the gears. It feels like a 'hyper space jump' in a Star Trek episode. 400 hp? 500 hp? As I mentioned before, there's no end to that race. What this car does is plenty fun enough for me. Heck, I was happy with the L98 in the 87', as we could cruise 75-80 all day long in the blue C4. I accidentally got sideways this morning coming into Lockheed, when I went for the holeshot making a left turn and put a little too much shoe into it! But she recovered totally well and we straightened out the launch and resumed our trip.
Funny thing I noticed about the C4. It's the last of the Vette's that has the fuel filler where it's always been on a Corvette... right smack in the middle of the rear deck. I love my new C4. I could've got a C5, but something about the C4's aircraft-like cockpit and looks, just makes it the right choice for me.
