Real car thieves....such as we have in border areas....just bring a tow truck and a dolly. 90 seconds later, your car rolls away, never to be seen again. An hour later it's keyed and running again, an hour after that it's in Mexico.
Comprehensive coverage on your insurance is really your only protection when the car isn't home.

1. It is estimated that a little more than half of all stolen vehicles leave the country (USA), never to be seen again (by the owner).
2. Stolen vehicle recovery is at an all time low (due to item #1)
I must have missed something. I was thinking the OP was asking about theft deterrents while away from the vehicle (like eating out, sleeping, etc).
All jokes aside, when I was a poor college student (I'm still poor but no longer in college ) driving my 1969 Mustang the car had no alarm or other deterrent. What did I use to do?
I used to leave my chilton repair manual on the passenger seat or dashboard...

Well, I always park as close to my destination and in the most visible area that I can, but that's common sense. My friend's car has been broken into at LA Fitness, and its an upscale place. Just make sure nothing is visible, and they should pass it by as far as theft from the vehicle.
As far as the protection itself, invest in one of those hidden car tracking devices. You'll find your car if its been stolen. An alarm system helps too.
Another way to prevent theft is simply driving a Honda.
