Texas says you have to have one facing front and back.... doesnt say where just that it needs to face front and back. My front is right behind me rear place facing forward Pissed off a few cops with that one. Its all in the wording.
Dude, if those cops didn't write you a ticket based on your interpretation of the written law, they were morons. If you would've told a judge that in traffic court the judge would smile at you for being creative and then enforce the ticket. It's more than the wording it's the "spirit" of the law or for us lawyer types the "public policy" behind the law.

Sad but true, he lives one street up and I pass his house everyday. He caught up to me at the corner convenience store in uniform and said "I sure would hate to run into you again without that front plate if you know what I mean".... message received.
just tell him- 'watch it buddy, I know where you live'
Be careful with a frame. In most states it's illegal to cover any part of a license plate. If a cop is in a really bad mood he can cite you for covering part of the plate.
If I understand correctly in NY the frame can't cover any writing. So even if the plate numbers themselves are visible, if it hides the state or the slogan you could get a ticket.
No doubt it's one of those things they don't pull you over for, but if you get the cop pizzedoff at you, it's one he CAN write if he's out to nail you. I got rid of the frames just so I don't have the issue.
I bought a C5 manual retractable license plate frame and it works perfectly on my '92 C4.
Easy 5 minute assembly.
Though I don't display my front plate even though we're supposed to in Minnesota, I like the look better without it shown.
My excuse if I ever get stopped is that I forgot to flip it up after the car show.
The manufacturer is in Minnesota and I was able to pick it up directly from them which saved a little.
They are in a suburb just north of MPLS and I am happy o supply you with the info if you like.[IMG][/IMG]
No frame, but a clear plastic "cover" to keep the bug juice off it. I would try going front plateless but with the troopers around here it'd just be a matter of time before the lights came on.

A court case was decided here in Texas in the appeals court the other day that says the plate must be on the front bumper of the car, not in the window or just facing forward. This was in the Austin or Dallas paper last week. The article was about a man pulled over for no front plate on the bumper but in the window and then found with drugs. He tried to have the case thrown out for being an improper stop. Previous case law never specified that it had to be on the bumper, just in the front half of the car. You are correct that the law just says it has to face forward but now they will have case law to nail us with. I think the new ruling conflicts with two previous rulings but they upheld it anyway.
I own a sign and graphic business.
I just created a checkerboard on black 3M vinyl, cut to shape., and applied it to the lenses.
It gives it a kind of "stealth" look.

astepup said that
The Illinois law won't even allow a clear cover on the front plate!!!

In NY a front plate is required. And a frame or clear cover is not allowed. Will you get a ticket.......depends on the Trooper or Sheriff ????? I dont need trouble, I just run a front plate, bolted tot he OEM mounting holes.
Front plates are required here in Maryland. I ran the LT4 car without one until I got pulled over for it. Now both C4s use this clear cover, which preserves the contours of the front bumper as if the filler panel were still in place, but keeps the cops from giving the front end a second glance:
It makes for the best compromise I can find between the filler panel and the bare license plate. This cover might be technically illegal in some states, but I've been using them in MD on both of my cars for years and have never had a problem.

In NY this is illegal but I still use this on my car-Have been pulled over and not one comment on this clear frame-it just looks better than the plate by itself- I agree with SJW totally
