Safelight came out to do my 57 Chevy pickup, and tried to install the windshield wth the molding upside down.
They scratched my dash, dented the stainless that fits in the molding, and came back 3 times, never got it in. used blue tape to keep the windshield from popping out. They apologized, and never saw them again.
I took it to a body shop that specializes in classic cars, and they didn't notice that the rubber was upside down. They couldn't get it in either. They taped it back up as well.
I went over to a friend's house that has a 58 Chevy pickup, and before we even started on mine, we looked his truck over pretty good.
That's when my friend said "holee cow, the rubber seal is upside down."
Sure enough , it was.
It took us novices about an hour to install it with the rubber right side up. He even gave me some good stainless as a loan. Now we have to take the windshield back out because the rubber has begun to crack, and it's only been a year and a half.
My point:
older cars are not like the new ones. Newer car windshields get replaced more frequently, because there are more of them to be replaced, and the method to install them has changed. We actually used some 3/16 nylon rope to install the windshield in the truck.
Today, they are just glued on.
The old windshields rubber go over what they call a "pinch weld" and the rubber lip has to be "placed" by the rope. The newer car windshields just have to be straight, and have no hiccups in the sealant.

So they called around four to say that they cant make it because two people called out and another guy is taking a half of day. Ya after I called them twice, they decided to tell me at four ! I bitched and they are going to give me new wiper blades for my vette, which I dont need nor drive in the rain. I should have told them i needed em for my infiniti.

I called around to use a new glass company, but every one around here seems to use safelite, and all the other companies dont seem very good.

Who does the local GM dealer use? Safelite?

Dan,

Give me your address and I will send you a case of glass cleaner.

once you use this stuff you will never use anything else.

I give it out to all of my Agents and they love it.

take the new blades, they get brittle with age and can scratch the glass even if you just clean your W/S with them.

RLG thanks I will msg it to you.

Wilson, GM and all the vette shops around here seem to use safelite, all the other companies seem shady.

_______________

So today is the appointment. They told me they were ordering a Pilkington which is what took so long. I spoke to them several times, and had the issue the otherday, where they even referenced the new pilkington window that was ordered.

So today the tech calls me at 915 and says they could not get the pilkington. You think they would have told me this during the week I waited and spoke to them .......... So they have a PPG. Which is fine, it was my second option. Tech says he will be here with in the hour.

Tech shows up around 1115. They sent him to another job first, even though he was on his way here. Ya screwed twice so far.

The tech seems pretty good, is pretty ****, and a car guy. I hang out, he gets the window out, does a nice careful job, protects the interior and the paint on the door etc. Gets the window out, cleans every thing, primers the entire window, sands a small rust spot. He did a good job.

BUT

the windshield to glass seal was no good. He did not have one and could not get one. GM 10236368. So im going to have to track one down, or just use some thing that is close from homedepot.

So my car waits again as I track this part down..

It's unfortunate that we can't tell that some of the internal parts on any installation are going to be bad.

Keep in mind that when we buy out glass, the stocking warehouse doesn't always tell us the straight story. Sometimes they show it in stock and we find out that they don't , usually after calling them back 15 times.

Well I searched all over the place for the window to dash trim.. There is not any out there. But yes I am pretty sure I just bought the last one on earth for a nice $89.00 ! Ya a lot of money, but insurance is covering it !

To be honest I found a piece of weather stripping that I think would work even better from H Depot. I like it because its skinnier, and has less of a chance of moving up on the window, and less visibility ! Fits in the seem perfectly ! I may have to do a write up, as a good fix for thoose who may need it, I mean its better then nothing !

You can tell on the older C4's when the windshield has been replaced. As I've seen alot with rusted VIN plates.

Your right I was talking to the tech about that, Most likely due to a bad install with a leak some where.

Yup, I had thought if I had to replace my windshield. Putting some strip caulk inside the windshield trim before it gets put back on to keep water from getting in through there. I know some run sealant in the crack after the trim is on. And obviously you have to run new striping or sealant on the back side of the weatherstrip retainers before those get put back on.

On that OEM dash seal you got. Any chance you could take some measurements of the length, width, and height? I'm guessing it is like a rectangle? That way maybe someone could find something else that would work. Autozone sells some different types of self adhesive weatherstripping I wonder if it could work since it appears the OEM seals are all gone.

Here's a pic of the OEM I could find:

Well I got my new weather strip. Its totally different looking then my original. I gues they must have changed the desighn. I ended up not using it because I felt as though it was going to lift up, and look bad. Ill prob through it back on ebay and try to get my money back from some one who needs the original, and doesnt mind using some glue.

Besides for that the window is in ! I lined up all the holes, and the guy agreed to let me put it all back together.

Ill wrap up my story, and some molding pics soon.

I just used a reg square piece of weather stripping. Ill get back to this when my project is complete, I took pics of all the moldings and install for people to see.

NEW PROBLEM:

Front windshield rubber molding.

So for the most part its all back together.I used the seal that was supplied by Safelite. Its GGG 951 IFS, Gold Glass Group, made in Thailand.

I can not get the door windows to seal nice against the rubber. The drivers side is ok, but that passenger side has a small gap. I tried every thing to make up the gap by moving the molding retainers, but it wont work.

Im thinking that this Thiland rubber is just not to spec. Thinking I need to order a OEM, or Wilcox which I used before and seems to fit pretty good.

Then again thinking back to when I put my upgraded power window regulators in, there is adjustments for how the window angles. Maybe I just need to take my door panels off, and move the drivers side window a slight bit more, so it seals against the rubber.

My brain is saying call Safelite, tell them to come get this thiland seal and credit me. THen go by a wilcox. If that doesnt work, then adjust the window regulators.

When did they tell you the price of the weatherstripping? I'm assuming before you bought it?

So here is my update.

I called safelite and told them I wanted Gm weather stripping. I got no where really.

I called hagarty and told them not to pay safelite because I want gm, and the part they used is crap.

About 1 week later, safelite called to say my gm part is in. They dropped it off. The tech and I compared the weatherstripping. The one they used was a mess of rubber. Some part were sloppy, had to much rubber. The bends did not go the way the should have. The entire left pillar side was visibly 1/2 inch thinner, and probably causing all my problems.

SO i got my gm part

Now another day to put it in, ill keep u posted !
