Luckily, the little piece that broke was next to the valve spring so all random pieces of metal are accounted for. No wonder it sounded like a tractor.
Yes, that would explain the John Deere nuances emanating from under the hood. Glad it's all accounted for.....a broken piece in the oil pan wouldn't be good news. And yes, the father son thing is priceless. Enjoying the thread.....keep it coming.

Damn.....I miss California already. Next time I'm bringing Marco.
Might be tempted to take a drive down and nose around If not definitely do a car run. I've missed out so far this year and they still haven't re-opened my Highway 2 so I've not really driven it this summer.
Oh check your plug leads, or just get rid anyway. I had a misfire problem that came down to the leads, and it wasn't visible from the outside. The new dizzy (opti) is a nice thing to have! They're not cheap.
I don't think its an Opti My father and I are both questioning the validity to the previous owners mechanical abilities.
Regardless, this valve spring issue could have came from a stuck valve and then us starting it. We did the proper procedure for a motor that hadn't been ran in a while but sometimes you don't get lucky.
Tuesday we will have the parts to complete that repair. While I had a few minutes between the family BBQ I hit the interior briefly... all I can say is wow its clean. Just gotta steam clean the carpets. The paint is okay, some scratches from the outside storage. I'll probably wetsand/wheel it out and it will look amazing. I'm starting to dig this color a lot.
Did you see that half the valve spring keeper is missing? You better find that. Yes, that was probably a stuck valve after seeing that. Be careful to fix ALL the damage that's there.

The keeper was sitting next to it, thats the part I was worried would be lost internally. Other than maybe a bent push rod I think we have all the issues assessed on this. I was a little misleading in my post since nothing really broke, the keeper just popped out.
I wouldnt worry about a car that sat for two years. Heck, I put some high octane fuel in one cause it was missing from old fuel..and that worked good enough to get her rolling and burnt the rest of the gas after filling her up. Ahhg, two years aint nothing. go for it.
The 90 coupe that i bought for parts sat uncovered for 10 years and thew a new battery at it,started and ran well... My other 90 coupe sat garaged for 4 years, never changed the half tank of gas and it ran like it was just tuned up.. 2 years was nothin' GET IT
OK, so it has molted successfully. You've got the skin to prove it. Where is the slithery part of the equation?
Dude... seriously!
Not sure if thats blood, poop or coffee/soda back there but we will be steam cleaning the **** out of it! I also noticed a nice vent that comes out by your feet in these cars. I don't even wanna look in them but now I have to! The only good part is all these stains are out of vision when the seats are in but I need to clean after seeing all those mouse turds and the snake skin.
Also the parking brake is stuck, is there a common flaw/fix?
As Tim's (TGTint) dad, I must say that this is a lot of fun. We've always enjoyed working on our various cars, but it is much more fun when you are working on classic machinery. Tim cut his teeth on my Triumph TR6, and then went on to restore his 94 Mustang 5.0 to show standard.
The Corvette is something we've both been looking at for a long time, and this is the perfect car for us. It needs a lot of TLC and minor work to bring her back (and she has shown us that she needs that TLC every step of the way since last Friday), but it is now getting close to running on all 8 cylinders.
The handbrake question is resolved ... once Tim had taken the cover off the handbrake and I saw the button-engaged pawl, I remembered that the brake is a positive application brake! Works fine now ...
Once we get the air hold tool, we will be able to get the valve spring keeper reinserted, and I'm sure that Tim will update on our progress once that is done!
snakes on a corvette! Spiders don't bug me but these guys do...
Hmm... How would one be sure that the owner of that skin has left the car? I would almost consider throwing a handful of firecrackers in there to make sure it's not hiding in the console or something .
