I am off the next 2 weeks and will get it apart ASAP. My FLUKE multimeter has a capacitance range. Can I get the caps at Radio Shack or do I need to order from Digi-Key?
Unlike yeeeeears ago when Radio Shack had parts, they now have a more than skimpy selection of parts. They have some stuff but it's more than hit and miss and more miss. You need PC board mount capacitors and have a physical size restriction. I'm not saying that more capacitance is a problem, but the size gets bigger to and you will not be able to mount it properly.
Digikey is not a bad way to go. You can even call up and tell a rep what you need to make sure you getting the right part. If you go with the same value of capacitance & voltage rating, chances are the physical size will be OK. Where I live here there is electronics surplus store with all kind of items and a huge selection of capacitors. If not for them, I would be looking at Digikey and some of the others to.
I removed & replaced the 2 filter caps, C7 & C8 . There was some junk under them, I don't know what it was. They both measured what I would think OK for a 47 Uf cap. The amp works just fine now.
FYI - C172 is a 10uf which is a coupling capacitor which affects sound quality. The rest are de-coupling capacitors the cause the pops and the squeals.
Charge on.
** The junk under all the caps is a rubber glue that helps hold the part in place thus relieving stress on the solder connections and lands on the PC board - over time, due to vibration and impact.
Mock bose all you want! The 90 parts vette I bought had new speaker assemblies and a rebuilt head unit and the sound is great in the 90 project car I am doing. I have the 200 watt system in my 97 camaro and bose in my 90 vette sounds just as nice.
Replace the 20 y/o speakers and amps and you will enjoy the bose again.
To buy electronic parts like capacitors, try Mouser Electronics. Radio Shack use to sell them, but my two stores here don't carry that stuff anymore. As pcolt94 mentioned, it might be a hit and miss with RS. http://www.mouser.com/Passive-Compon...citors&FS=True
The links PColt provided listed part numbers for Digi-Key. The parts showed up in 2 days.
I see all the rubber cement poured over the wire wound coils and caps. The junk under C7 & 8 was black. It cleaned up with IPA.
