I have a 95 Corvette convertible. I took it to the shop last year and had the radiator flushed and refilled. Now the car leaks antifreeze and when you drive slow the car starts to heat up. When you go 35 it is fine. Took it back to the shop and they say its not leaking. I can see it in may garage on the floor but they cant find a leak.
Do you think it might be the waterpump? I call the Chevy dealer they want$800.00 to replace the water pump. Are they that hard to replace? Any suggestions.
Does it leak enough to keep adding antifreeze??? Or just a few drops on the floor. How hot does it get??? Is it overheating ?? Are your fans coming on In traffic at low speeds they will get hot if your fans aren't coming on. Check and see what the heat gauge says at low speeds and what it reads at highway speeds. . THEN GET BACK HERE --Did they clean the road crap from the front of the coolant radiator??
$800 for a WP install is robbery! You can do the whole job yourself in 2 hours easy. Six bolts and it's out. There are some great threads here for install directions. You can get rebuilt pumps for under $100. New ones for under $300.
Find out where the coolant is coming from. Hose connections? Bleed valve? Leaking rad? Take it from there.
hey wingman that sounds like air trapped on your cooling system, i was so annoyed , that happened almost everyday, i decided to drill the thermostat and the problem was gone !
i had boiling water coming from the expansion tank
Wingman, Does it leak constantly - like if you don't drive it for a week? Or only after you return from a drive and then stops after a day (or after it cools down)?
Start by checking every hose clamp for tightness. Wipe everything clean and then watch for the leak to re-appear. Put a piece of corrugated under the car and see where the drops appear - that will give you a rough idea of where to start looking.
Like Ken1950 said, get back on here with more details. If you have any basic tool skills you can save a major part of that $800. Even if you can't do it yourself, the suggestions from here can give you knowledge and confidence if you have to have it done for you, and hopefully you can avoid a rip-off.
Just run your hand under the water pump towards the shaft in the rear of it. When the engine is not to hot see if you can feel any wetness or if you hand looks green. If you can get under the car have a look at the knock sensors also.
Look at, and in any brackets that run under the engine or radiator that could puddle in small areas that could hold coolant.
Look around the radiator as best you can with a flashlight (front and sides) for and tell tail of green discoloration.
I would think it would be obvious if it was coming out of the over flow tank.
Thanks to all that responded. I am older and not much of mechanic so I ended up taking it to the locate Chevy dealer. The water pump and radiator were both leaking. Had them both replaced and I hope that will be all for a while.
Thanks again.
