Default Missing VATS code

Need some help here Amigos. Wife lost corvette keys. No second set. Went to Chevy with Title and they got the key codes but GM does not show the VAT number. Any other place I can locate it?

Is not documented anywhere else.
The dealership or a locksmith should have a device to plug in and determine which of the 15 codes is correct for your car

I can't locate the thread right now, or verify the accuracy, but someone recently posted stating that the VATS code is stamped on the barrel of the ignition key cylinder. That would require removing the steering wheel and lockplate, but it might be an option if you can't find a dealer or locksmith with the Kent-Moore J-35628 Pass Vats Interrogator Tool Kit,

I just lost my keys at the beach and a locksmith came out and plugged in a key with different resistance switches on it. It allows him to switch to any of the resistances until the car starts. He then cut a key blank that worked first time. Cost me $80.00.

As frequently as VATS is disabled in these cars I'd first get whats called a "work-key" cut to the mechanical code that the dealer supplied. Did the dealer offer a "work-key"? If VATS is disabled it will work if the codes are correct!

You don't mention where you're located or what year your car is. There could be a forum member with an interogator in the vicinity or access to one.

A "work-key" is a blank with the correct length keyway so that mechanical operation of the cylinder can be confirmed. I'm assuming you don't know if the cylinder in the car has been replaced or not so I'd think it a wise first move. If the mechanical cut doesn't work now you'll know you need a new cylinder and still the VATS.

GM# for "work-key": 26007687

There are generic substitutes found usually at locksmiths.

Buy a little electrical voltmeter or test meter thing. Set it on 20k ohm and touch both sides of the key and it will show you. I just disabled vats on my 02 ss and it was 9.5k. Grabbed $2 worth of resistors and sautered them under the column to the appropriate while and voila no more vats.

If he had a key, yep, that would be a good way to check it. He lost his only key.
