Engine not wet. The vette sat for about six weeks in my garage and it started fine and ran great, I store the car approximately four miles from my house. When I arrived at the storage facility, I turned the vette off and it sat for about 30 minutes. When I restarted the engine it started to backfire out of the exhaust and run very rough. The car has 29,000 miles and I am the original owner.

given its age and low mileage, it could be many things, but start simple.
Take it out for a drive slow and steady where it gets up to temp, and then see if it does it again.
If it does it thereafter, suggest checking:
0. bad fuel? did you get fuel that time out?
1. fuel pressure regulator -- pull hose and asure no gas leakage into vacume system
2. fuel injectors -- ohm test to see if any odd ones
3. Check spark plug wires for shorting (check in darkness) or not all the way on the plug -- also check OPTI side and coil wire too.
4. check for a loose spark plug
5. check Ignition control module (ICM) -- can remove and have Autozone test it
6. check for vacume hose breakage, or vacume leak around intake
7. etc.
8. last item might be OPTI, given age, and likely oil leaks and since it is vented only via the 3 small holes on the bottom, it can suck-in stuff...
