okay okay, well dad and i worked on her today a bit, changed the plugs cap rotor, new valve cover seals, etc, gettin the tranny rebuilt, and the AC recharged, gettting the rims cleaned up and polished, gettin tint and detailing the interior and throwing a for sale sign on her for as much as we have in her..... heres hoping.... anyone wanna sell me an LT1 vette? :D
well, the diff needs to be replaced.... there is a nasty howl back there. The interior is gonna cost a bit, and just little stuff, (headlight motor, Hood mount, interior lighting)
i bought the car not really knowing what it was, they are great if you dont have to drive them everyday.... unless you are in a warm climate. i live in Canada. When i wrote this thread i was pissed because i found out i needed the tranny rebuilt, just a matter of frustration. My dad absolutely loves the car, and if i don't sell it, hes gonna buy it from me when he can. so all in all i get to drive a vette for the summer, not a bad deal.
my interior was trashed, i repainted and cut all new carpet and re covered the seat myself, cost me about 500cnd. Looks as good as new, as for the diff, its probably the rear wheel bearings, my right one is shot and howls. The new bearing is in the garage i havent put it in yet.
Withs cars this old, the ujoints, theres 6, and the bearings are usually worn out. Ive done my half shaft joints which got rid of most of my clunking, now the driveshaft ones are clunking, i havent got to them yet. No big deal ujoints are cheap.
I understand where you are coming from, we all get tired of little things that pop up. I think you would be happier with a later model vette. The 84 was the first year and most peple I know who own them have had trouble. But get whatever makes you happy.
I purchased my '96 LT4 CE in Nov of '99. Since then I have spent $8,337 to keep it on the road, including $2400 for an A/C Compressor and $1460 for a clutch and flywheel as well as many other smaller problems. At the present time 2nd gear synchromesh is out and I'm told the only way to fix it is with a new tranny...$2,000. Whoever heard of synchromesh going out!!! Vettes are pretty but they sure are high maintenance...just like most of the women I date.
lol.... yah women are a heckuva lot more high maitenance.
Took the vette out tonight, in the rain. And i had a blast, even with 4th not there, and still being underpowered a bit, i had a hoot. Whippin around corners, splashing pedestrians, and the low slung race car ness is awesome. Had the tunes cranked and was having a blast. Still gonna sell her, but i am gonna have a fun fun summer! :seeya

 That's friggin' larceny!
I will say that the second gear synchro is the one that always seems to go first, but I haven't heard of many ZF6s with that problem. A new ZF6 is more like six grand, but I've never heard of anybody replacing the transmission because of a bad synchro. Switch shops or do the work yourself!
no but kicking the rear end out in the rain is not a smart idea, the car lacks hp, but its got 300ftlbs on tap, and can end up backwards on the sidewalk with a broken rim and a bruised ego..i speak from experience during my younger dumber days. Stick to dry pavement.
Dude you have an '84.
You hate its power: '84 had the least power of all C4s
You hate its ride: Again, its an '84 which had the harshest hardest riding C4 suspension, maybe hardest in a vette period
You picked the wrong year to compare vettes to.
Most C4s will destroy 4th gen F-bodies, especially the ones that would cost the same as an '84. You should look for an 89 with a 6 speed. Inexpensive, more power, better ride, great trans and cheap to maintain and modify.

Yeah, that is NUTS!! My fiance did the clutch in my 90 when I had it, and it was $300 for the clutch itself, and I think the total came to around $400 for EVERYTHING. My friend just called and told me the shop says his 2000 WS6 has "hot spots" on the clutch, and they'll replace it for him, "cut him a deal" at $1200. The labor is just ungodly. Try to find a buddy or something and do it yourself, that's the way to go for sure!! $2400 for an A/C compressor? I think I would be living without A/C!!
Tyrel I know that 84's are tough to deal with. I had one before my 92 I have now.I felt just like you, Were is all is famous vette power. The crossfire is not a bad engine but due to the gas crunch in the late 70's and early 80's the 205 hp just didn't cut it.
I would hold on to it for a year or so and trade it in on a L98 or LT1 vette. Thats what I did and I am no longer the slow vette when I go for a cruise.
yah, i am debating. I really enjoy the looks of the vette, and when people ask you what you drive they are amazed that you drive a vette. Especially at my age. I would love an 89 6 speed, or anyother 6 speed vette, but where i am they are extremely costly.
I know kickin out the backend is not a great idea, but what i lack in age, i make up for in expierience. I have been driving V8 cars since i was 10 on our farm, i have never owned a non GM non rear drive non v8 car since i turned 16. My formula had 321 RWHP and 342lbs of torque, so i am used to the power thing. I drove it all winter in canada, not an easy task but i did fine.
i don't want you guys to get mad at me or anything, i know the 84's are one of the worst years for vettes, i know that they came stock with 205 hp, thats fine, the crossfire is not a bad motor at all, actually i think it might be better than the l98, not stock of course, but swap out the intake manifold, throw in a truck ECM and new injectors, and 250-270hp is not out of the question. anyways, thanks for all of your advice.
