I find it interesting that replacing the opti was not an option. After removing the water pump, it is only a few screws to remove the opti, and it may be water-damaged, also. Hope you don't have to repeat the process.

My spider senses say that this shop is one to avoid.

Correct me if I am wrong (L98 guy), but isn't the thermostat mounted into water pump housing ?
That being said, if you have to replace pump, you have to transfer over the thermostat housing and thermostat to the new pump ???? $200 ????

Wouldn't surprise me if it was a split hose or loose clamp

Default Water pump .......

Yep, I hear you both. Was a little shocked at the price as well. Autozone sells the thermostat for 13 bucks. I do not know the location of where it is. I replaced my Buick thermostat for 13 bucks. Learning the hard way that if you have a vette then service pricing is higher. I hope the otispark is ok like I said I never drove it when the pump went there was no coolant on it whatsoever. A quick question I have had a few places / people tell me that I need to drive the car more then 1k a year. Anybody that has an answer on this would be appeciated.

1k a year is a little less than 20 miles a week. I would think that would get all the parts and seals warmed up and lubed. Just don't let it sit for months at a time.

$800 is border line rape. An additional $200 for the t-stat IS rape. Cars don't like to sit up. I wouldn't let it go for more than a couple weeks without driving it.

They also said to replace the radiator hoses as well and said the heater hoses looked ok I told them to replace them. Total cost for all of this was 800.00 does this sound too much. They only use gm parts and are all new.
This is not a difficult or time consuming repair. But it depends on how they are charging you. If they are going by book time, IIRC it's around 3 hrs. So depending on this shops hourly rate, maybe $360 labor tops. The pump is probably around 200-250? The hoses, probably another 150 or so w. heater hoses included. Then of course there is the charge for the new coolant, probably 60 or so, and then shop fees for hazmat disposal, and supplies (you know shops charge you for the towels they use) So, if 800 includes all of this, that's about right, again depending on labor rate and how they are billing the job.

Wow, I owe alot to by older brother for teaching me how to turn a wrench when I was a kid.

Sounds about right.
Ever considered buying a manual and doing your own repairs?

Saves you a big chunk of money

Default Water pump ......

I have a Haines manual and the diagram show the thermostat right on top of the water pump so 200 for this is a joke! I am glad I declined the service shop on replacing that. The labor for the water pump was 310 then as stated above coolant hoses ac delco water pump and all seem about right. I think they were trying to tack on more money for nothing but a big profit. They seem to do the repairs in one day so cannot fault this. I will contiue to go there but keep an eye on these items they say needs to be replaced.
