Weird computer problem when under hard acceleration
I was driving along in my '93 and I found myself getting onto a long, empty highway at 3 a.m. a few months ago, so I decide to "explore the acceleration capabilities". So I stopped, put it in first, revved up to about 2k, let the clutch out and went. I got to about 60 and let off (speed limit's 60).
Here's where things started getting weird, when I let off the "Service ABS" and "Service ASR" lights came on. So I pulled off of the road and turned the car off. Started the car up again and the lights were gone and didn't come back on. About two weeks later I decided to do a 15 mph roll to the speed limit and the same thing happened! Once again, I turned the car off and when I turned it on the lights never came on and I've had no mechanical problems with the car.
I never really addressed the issue because I was trying to sell the car and didn't feel like having to fix it, and I have barely driven it this summer (only about 500 miles this summer). But after looking at other cars to replace this, I realized that I love my C4 to replace it with anything else. So I'm going to keep the car, and I'm going to have to figure out what the hell's going on.
I would be interested to know how your ASR underhood is adjusted with a manual. with my automatic, sometimes this occurs if my Throttle valve cable is out of adjustment, its a simple fix outlined in the FSM, but for your Manual Trans..not sure how this is adjusted, but could be one lead for you. Best of Luck. do you have access to the FSM for your year?

Yep! Original Owner bought it for me about two months after I bought the car from him because I kept it in such good condition.
But thank you guys!! Right now I'm in my dorm 2 and a half hours from home. I'll go and look in the FSM next time I go home and see if that works.
You may want to try this simple solution first. Top off the brake master cylinder. Stange as it sounds the low brake fluid sensor in the master cylinder can cause what you describe even if the fluid level is just slightly low. The change in level due to acceleration or braking can be enough to trip the switch, good luck.
So low brake fluid would make the Service ASR light come on too? The Service ABS light is a given, but I'm not following how the ASR light would come on as well. I know the two are interconnected, but it's not clicking in my head as to why.

ASR is part of the ABS system, the low brake fluid code (83) will disable them both. Page 5E2-124 in book #1 of the 93 FSM.
See Page 8D-4 to learn how to display fault codes from ABS and other controllers using the speedometer display.

One possibility is: Since the ASR and ABS both are functions of operation of the braking system. Since it occurs under accel, and clears when the switch is turned off and then back on it sounds like, ARE YOU Ready????? The fluid is low in your master cylinder. Rear thrust of the car sends the fluid in the reservoir to the rear and low fluid then allows the sensor, located at center and slightly below the middle of the plastic housing to turn on.... Be sure not to over fill and DO use the correct fluid or you will have far more issues than just a light on.
Good luck.

Not a bad plan! I've recently gotten into beamers, and I'm really hoping to find an E49 wagon right now. Just waiting for a good one with a manual to show up.
