I have Sylvania SilverStar's in my '87 and have not had any electrical issues but I think they re only a 55W bulb. When I had my '92 roadster, I used a set of Hella Euro conversion lamp housings and H4 style bulbs. Hella still makes them and I believe CIBIE also makes similar housings.
IIRC, the Xenon bulbs I used were 90W low beam and 100W high beam. Can't remember the brand name but they were a 5000K bulb temperature.
Both the Hella and CIBIE housings are glass and I never had any problems with the gears or motors.
The stock style headlights are all pretty much the same. They can't vary too much because then they wouldn't be compatible. I have the SilverStars and I do like them.
Here's a reference with a lot of good information:
If you want a dramatic increase in lighting (like HID lamps) then you'll usually have to do some pretty extensive modifications to the wiring.
I said "usually" because I heard of a plug-and-play LED (yes, LED) setup a few months ago that is compatible with the stock wiring. You're lucky I have a really good memory and I remembered the name was weird (they started out making audio equipment):
