Default It is called a speed limit...

but apparently some of you think it is more like a speed suggestion.

Just show up and park your car and introduce yourself these guys are just like you. Now as far as a track goes ? I never looked into it. I did research a place you can just open it up and go as fast as it can go and came up with Bonneville Salt Flats in northern Utah or some place in CA. I am thinking CA might not be so remote but again I am not certain. As for your situation I completely sympathize with you. Some members REALLY hammer the point of danger and public safety. I agree with them. Once an accident happens its too late. However there are places out here where WE LIVE that are unique to anything these guys have ever seen except in movies. Miles and miles of open desert flat and straight. If you drive a car like a Corvette and never want to go over 65-75 miles per hour well you are WEIRD. I had my wake up call to speeding and the consequences are losing my license if I keep it up. I know a guy who owns 3 Corvette's and one sits on a trailer. He drives it on some road course and races it around. Very expensive but he does his own work so he is dumping money into parts and tires. I suspect he gets the bug out of his system racing on that track. Personally I don't think wearing a helmet when I drive my car sounds fun. I'm 6'2" and I weigh 245. No Im not some fat slug my waist is 34". I barley fit in that car and I slouch a bit so my eyes see through the windshield and not the visor. I am rambling now. Well the law rules and so does public safety. Seeing that wide open stretch of desert is SOOOOOO tempting. Oh the last A.C.E meeting I went to there were two guys in modified Corvettes. One a twin turbo C5 and the other a Z06 with a supercharger on it. Both from Payson AZ. They were saying they made it to the meeting in 35minutes. 85 miles and not all open road. In fact its twists and turns and the occasional small town you pass by. The meeting is in south Scottsdale not north. These guys had to have been doing 140+ on stretches permissible. Average 100mph. They also had a device that causes a cops radar detector to blank out to zero. I said But if he sees you going 140+ mph he will still pull you over ! Oh after he catches up.
Hey Dan, yes, I have been to the Corvettes and Caffeine get togethers a few times on those early Saturday mornings. Always a good time. I met the guys from Payson too. Not sure how they are getting away with having that radar jamming device but it is pretty cool. Let me know if you find a good place to really put the hammer down. Other than that I'm doing better at keeping the speed reasonable. Perhaps I will see you at the December meeting. Jack

i think that if being a police officer is something that you really want to do, then go for it. the job can be rewarding if you treat people with respect and don't abuse your authority. its a dangerous job at times but one that i truly enjoy. thank you for the compliment on the black 84!

As I understand the law in New York State being in the 90 MPH club can get you into deep trouble. You can even be arrested in New York State if you cause a death or accident in you speeding thrills. Doing 90 plus also takes quite a distance to stop and the possibility of someone not seeing you while they enter a thruway or changing a lane is very possible. If you hit a person or another vehicle while speeding and they are injured or wose they die you can go to jail in New York state and do hard time. You can also be sued in New York State if your speeding and cause and injury to someone. If your going to drive crazy make sure your insurance policy covers well over serveral hundred thousand dollas because here people sue for millions. I think most people myself included go over the posted speed limits. at one time or another, But doing speeds in acess of 90 is just plain reckless. If you have the need for speed fine a local drag strip. There you can pound the hell out of your corvette with no fear of expensive fines, jail time or worst yet taking someones life. We are all guilty of speeding at one time or another Im sure. But when you think about the price for such a cheap thrill its just not worth it. I have heard of fines in excess of $5,000 for some speeders. A simple parking ticket in New York State runs anywhere from $120.00 to $140.00. Speeders can expect to start paying about $500.00and up. You can also get your license taken away and car impounded for not having the right paper work at a car stop. Word to the wise if your in New York dont speed.

You usually have two choices out there on crowded highways. 55-60 in the right lane because that's about what it always is over there. Or over 100 in the left lane because there is usually one high speed draft of three or four after another runnin that lane and they ain't slowin down for nobody. The driver with the biggest brass owns it

The State of Alabama taught me to slow down, wear my seat belt and to use my directionals. Face it, we have a target on our cars so obey the law and you wont have any problems.

The main reason I don't like too many of the new cars is the fact that they can destroy the speed limits so easily. I had an open class sport bike that ran low 10's and found it boring short shifting the transmission or skipping gears to keep at a sane speed. So for me, I don't have a problem with a 13.5-15 sec car on the street if it handles and brakes well.

As the the autobahn, I've been lucky to drive on it a few times. German drivers are required to take way more education that we do here. In fact, my German buddy came over here and got his US driver's license in FL in about 5 minutes (Pre 9/11).
He said it was a joke and they have must higher standards in Germany. Over there you're not allowed to pass on the right so it's courtesy there for slower cars to get over. The high speeds there is all based around that.

The high speed areas are really just in rural potions of the Autobahn. I rent BMW's or Mercedes and they cruise nicely at 130MPH with no drama at all. What winds up happening is slower vans and cars don't see you until you've had to slow down to just say 90mph before they get over. Likewise I had a few Porsche's come up on me at over 160 and I didn't see them until they were on my tail. The fast cars usually put on their left blinker to get your attention. Anyway, once you experience extended legal high speed cruising, 70 MPH really feels slow.

Your actions dictate the officers actions. By your own admission, you were speeding. You don't want any interactions with the police, save the speed for the track. Don't blame the officer being a "dick" when you were driving like one. I'm not going to be a hypocrite here and say I haven't done some high speed driving on public roads, but as I've aged, I'd like to think I've got some wisdom. Have fun with your car, but not at the point that it endangers others. I don't think that's difficult. Stay safe out there.

Boy, some of the posts on here remind me of when I was a kid. Of course when you're that age there is no danger. Deer, dogs, raccoons never walk into the road when you're going 115. Little old ladies never pull out in front of you when you're doing 70 down some neighborhood. Since you have good tires and a well cared for car, you never have a blowout or mechanical failure, parts never break. And if you do wreck, hey, you've got an air bag and the seatbelt on, so nothing will hurt you, right?

I sometimes think I used up so much of my good luck back then I'd better not tempt it too much now. Acceleration is fine, an on ramp is a terrible thing to waste. But some of the stuff discussed here is just crazy. I only hope you don't take innocent people with you when you go.

One other comment. We often used to have the local cops arrest guys operating snowmobiles and ATV's down the right of way along the railroad tracks or even ON the tracks. A common gripe was "Where else am I supposed to ride it?" (This was in a suburban area.) The answer was "Not our problem, where did you THINK you were going to ride it when you bought it?"

Yeah, it may be a shame to have 600 HP and a car that can go 160 and the speed limit is less than half of that. But you knew the limits before you bought the car. It's not up to the public to provide you a place to let it all out.

Yes I cruise a little above the limit. Yes I took the Vette into 3 digits - ONCE, on an Interstate in Wyoming, where I could see 5 miles ahead and 5 miles behind and there were no other cars either direction. I'm not a goody-goody. But you could not pay me ANY amount of cash to do some of the stuff I did in my '67 Vette back when I was 20. I'm damn lucky to be here today. I hope some of you kids will have the good luck to live to be old too.

Lived in Wisconsin, drove snowmobiles at 80MPH-until. Responded to a call with my friend ( a volunteer responder), to a snowmobile accident. Person went thru a barb wire fence that caught him in the neck-enough said. That slowed me down driving everything.

Sure, speeding can be dangerous but around here a soccer mom texting in her Yukon is much more dangerous.

As well as the person who drives way too cautiously so that others must try to get around them as they are holding up traffic.

That's reason enough to keep the foot of the pedal.

I drove to LA for Thanksgiving 2013. The trip here the I-10 was jam packed from PHX to LA and the average speed was 85mph. I stayed with the majority following the same cars until I pulled off to pee. The occasional car was doing 90+ some possibly more ? Had I not gotten that ticket I would have been right there with those nut cases. And I'm talking regular cars and SUV's not sports cars. Here in LA are the occasional cars doing 100+ and being the guy driving 75-80 right along with the mass traffic flow they seem reckless for sure. As far as people driving the speed limit goes I ain't seein it. The CHP goes 75-80 so whatever I am not going to be some odd ball who jams the traffic flow up. City streets yes people seem to obey speed limits but NOT on the freeway. Just what I see and I'm right here.

Nice lie the feds did telling the big trucking associations before the law was passed what was done in a car would not go on your commercial license then at the last minute sticking it into the law. Typical of the lying totally corrupt trash in washington DC. What you do in a car and a truck are totally different things there's no comparison between the two

I have no problem with the lower .4 alcohol limit for a professional driver if he's in his truck. Any professional driver in a truck with any alcohol that can register should be taken out hanged on the nearest tree limb.
