I heard someone say that in TX if we are going any amount of speed and are only speeding then they can not arrest you. Is that true?
absolutely NOT! ANY time you get a ticket for speeding, that is an arrestable offense. The only reason you don't go to jail is because you sign that you will appear in court or mail in a fee. Do you ever read what you sign?!?! I'm no lawyer, but I've taken some law classes, and you NEVER EVER sign something you don't read.
112 in a 65 here. Threatened to take me to jail and all that crap. I ended up paying a fine in the neighborhood of $500. If you're going much faster than that it might not be worth waiting around to see what they have to say. Not to say that I would because I decided a long time ago not to run anymore.
I personally find it very hard to support the traffic ***** when the speed laws are so ridiculous and everything else, that is to say everything that actually has some bearing on safety, is ignored.
The speed limit on rural highways and limited access freeways should be 100+.

By the way, the Washington State Patrol has a program targeting agressive drivers and they use very stealth rigs which they rotate through the state. They had a late model white Volvo, a Ford Expedition, and several other totally unmarked cars. No antannas, no visible emergency lights, not even WSP lisence plates. In fact, the officer said they would even tear the left sleave off of an old work coat or something and pull it over their left arm while they drive with the window down and their arm resting on the door so that from outside the car they looked like an average working guy.
I think they've lost the concept of playing fair! :boxing
I read the books here in CA, they must be in uniform, so that little trick might get you a waiver in court. And unmarked cars only have jurisdiction over investigations, obtaining evidence, etc.
And since when do they think they can start buying German cars? I guess Volvo is Ford-owned now anyways. The Sherrif in my dad's town drives a 4-wheel drive Volvo.
The CHP here on the central coast picked up a handful of these new 310hp LS-1 Camaros (160mph!). They claim they're for keeping up with truckers, and watching for safety hazards on the big rigs. *Yeah right* I'm sure they wouldn't hesistate to chase me down and beat me down if I passed em going 120. You can't outrun these guys-- and you know they're just begging for any excuse to go 160!

In our area the WSP use a brown Volvo wagon and a variety of Tahoes, Suburbans and Explorers (as does the county sheriff!) and other "regular looking" cars. Lately, I've seen a 5 or 6 year old Suburban in all black with tinted windows and black wheels with just the little center hubcaps. In Seattle they even use a Taxi for their road rage program.
As to getting these vehicles, I would think some of them come from drug bust forfeitures and other undercover operations. Last month, I just saw one of the new WSP Camaros; no visible lights on the dash or rear shelf, radio antennas, or any other markings like WSP plates. The lights were the red/blue strobes hidden inside the headlamp/tailamp housings.
About seven years ago I was driving My 87 Iroc Z28 from The Bay Area up to the now MTV famous U.C. Davis to visit my then Girlfriend. I got pulled over for speeding but it got interesting as i pulled off after the traffic stop cruiser lights still flashing some little toyota truck comes flying (Deffinitely speeding) up from behind I punch it get at least 3 car lenths ahead and he freaks out slamming on his breaks just hard enough that when it mixed with the lite Cali rain sent him off the road down an inbankment as I watched from my rear view and the cop watched from behind.  needless to say I was glad when I finally got to Davis. I guess that cop will never pull anyone over next to an on ramp again.
Caught? You must be kidding. What about peeling out right in front of a cop once? Then leaving a car show too? Or was that he same incident? :)
I thought I remembered this story some time back...this was Patrick eh?
Cop was right behind him at the light and he never saw them or something and let out a hiroshima cloud of tire smoke and noise and went sideways or something.
Either way, caught or not,Thats my kind of Vette owner!!
Can't really say that Vett's are the leading speeders on the SoCal freeways. I get tailed more often by some fool in an Expedition or a Suburban who thinks the spped limit is around 85 for their gas guzzlers.
On the LA to Vegas run you gotta see the C-4's and C-5's poking along at 75-80 and the SUV's zipping by at 90+, only to get stopped by the CHP a few miles later.
Seriously guys, if you want to do the crime, you will do the time. In CA, with a child in the car, 150 on the open freeway will cost you your license for about a year, about $3,000 in fines and costs, and an insurance increase that will make your car payments look like small change. For child endangerment you may get some free time on the local County Hotel, cleaning roadsides for 6 months and a years on weekly get smart classes, all at your expense. Might as well kiss your car good-bye, because for about a year, your Butt will belong to the local Sheriff.
A couple of weeks ago I was on I35 going from Austin to Dallas and I was getting pissed because some SUV was doing 65 in the fast lane. The speed limit was 65, but it makes me mad as hell when people drive in the fast lane instead of using it as passing only lane, like the signs in TX say. So I finally get the opportunity to get around and I haul butt past him. Before I know it I'm doing 103 MPH and my radar detector starts going crazy. I hit the brakes, but its too late.
I pull over and the cop comes up behing me. Then I notice that the SUV that I went around pulled over in front of me. I was scared, I thought he was just there to rat on me to the cop. Turns out that the guy in the SUV was an off duty cop!!!! Damn, I about crapped my pants. I thought I was going to jail for sure. The off duty cop and the cop that pulled me over gave me a several minute lecture, then let me go with a speeding ticket. Let me tell you, I felt like the luckiest man alive that day. The ticket only cost me $210.
I have a xr650l (dual - sport) motorcycle sitting at a light in town with two
harleys next to me.I figured I wolud give the guys a little show, set it up on the back wheel through 1st 2nd and 3rd gear.Little did I know there was a sheriff sitting about 5 car lengths behind me.The front wheel came down and I seen the blue light in my mirror way back there.Thats were stupid got in my brain, took off around a couple corners before I came to my senses.I pulled over had my helmet, gloves and off my bike before he caught up to me.Told me to drop my helmet where he proceed to frisk me and ask why I was trying to run from him.About 3 other sheriff cars pulled up, to make a long story short they did'nt give me an evading arrest but filled the ticket up with everything else.Reckless driving speeding, 65 in 25,no motorcycle lic ,expired registration:smash.Went to court and bargained for exhibition of speed(2 pointer)ouch, and they dropped everything else. :
In the not so great state of Illinois, 40 over is a Class A misomenor (sp?). I think that's an automatic trip to jail. Thankfully, I've never been busted for 40 over, so I don't know for sure :blueangel:
Got pulled over doing 98 in a 75 in the salt lakes back then in my mustang.
I had just read the issue on Maxim about getting out of a ticket.
Like it said, I put my hands up and told my Gf to do the same and just did what was on the magazine. The cop thanks me for being honest and put the ticket for going 80 on a 75. payed 50 bucks insteat of the 235 it was supposed to be and left with the always memorable roadtrip ticket.
It's not the nice cars that speed and drive like crazy on the road. It's all thos p.o.s cars that every tom dick and harry is driving and couldn't care less if they crash it. Most of the time I see someone pulled over, it's in a crappy car that you wouldn't even think can exceed the speed limit.
I had a close call doing 85 in a 55.A POS van was riding my bumper and i gassed it to get the heck away from the guy and just as i hit 85 i see the lights on top. It was the State Patrol....so I slammed on the brakes and he missed me luckily. I was real nirvous for the rest of that ride.

Me and a good friend of mine were on Westheimer, near downtown houston, in his paper plate Subaru Impreza WRX doing 115 in a 45 and got pulled over. Make a long story short, my friend got arrested and the driver of the camaro we were racing got arrested and I had to sit and wait for a ride while he went to jail for 3 nights.

Re: Excessive Speeding (1bad85)
Later on that year, while fleeing the scene of some good ole fashioned street racing in his paper plate 35th anniversary Camaro SS he got pulled over and for violating his probation from previous arrest got to spend 2 months in city lock up. bad luck i tell ya
I..got popped in Kilometers once.....240 klics in a 50 klic zone...
(thats about 140 mph in a 32 mph zone).....that was in Germany many many years ago.....my CO (Commanding Officer).had to come to the polizie station to get me... .I forget what the fine was...it really wasnt much...like 500 D-Marks...which at the time was only a hundred dollars or so.....but then the Army took my license for a couple months.....and then the CO had a piece of my rear end......... :smash:
Well the biggest speeding ticket i got isnt much (70 in a 45), but i did get a ticket for "Exhibition of Acceleration of Speed" :nonod: for making a u turn with about 5% steering wheel and 95% accelerator pedal. :D

Re: Excessive Speeding (Kdrhpe)
A looong time ago a buddy and I were headed into Terre Haute, IN on motorcycles about 11 PM. At a light on the 4 lane main drag where there isn't another light for about 1/2 mile I decide to really get on it with my Kawasaki 900. When the light changed I dropped the clutch and took off. Just as I was passing 100 mph a bright flash of light appeared on my left. I knew immediatly it was a cop. I slammed on the brakes. As soon as I was slowed enough to make a turn I hit the ligt switch killing my lights and then made a sharp turn left into a neighborhood. Going down the street with no lights I found an alley which I went into, killed the motor, and then rolled into the first open garage I found. Heart pounding, I sat there and waited 45 minutes before venturing out to motor quietly through the neighborhood and out a back way.
My buddy says the cops heard me coming and turned on their spot light. He said they saw me hit the brakes hard, but when I let off the brakes and killed the lights I was far enough away that nobody saw me turn. He said it was as if I suddenly disappeared from the earth. The cops were in mid u-turn when I disappeared. The stopped in the middle of the street and then resumed their original path. They gave my buddy the nastiest looks but didn't stop him. He said he was sure thay were going to bust him for my antics.
