Yeah, so I havent posted in a while. Sorry about that.
Perhaps ten years ago or so I bought a new center console for my 95. The coating on the original one was pealing like a bad sunburn.
I never got around to putting on the new one as I didn't want to have one new part as that would cause me to tear the whole car apart to make the rest of the parts match.
The broken cup holder door final bugged me enough that I took down the new part. It was wrapped in bubble wrap and as I undid the wrap the coating was coming off like bad frosting.
I just chucked the whole thing in the trash.
It's been so long I cant even remember where I got it from.

Oh well. Maybe the are making them better now.
Mine is doing the same thing. There is one on ebay I have been looking at. It says the rubber coating is like original. But who knows. It's $105.00 with free shipping. Just not sure if I wantto do that or 3M carbon fiber it!
I believe that coating is called Dulso. Using that tag will help you find info on recoating your console if you are into that sorta thing. If not, there is a new one here.
By "natural", do you mean no finish at all? My repro console that I installed a few years back is starting to get nicked up from normal wear and tear.
yes, by natural, I mean no finish at all. I did a couple threads a few years ago about stripping dulso, and I refinished with no finish. here's a pic of the finished console in my 96 coupe -
it was not a 100% perfect match to the dulso, but pretty damn close. as far as peeling, chipping, scratching, etc., there was nothing to worry about. if it ever took a beating, a quick once over, and it would be good as new.
I had both my 1993 and 1994 center console, vents and what no Plasti Dipped using the spray cans. Clean them up, lightly sand if needed and grease them spray on a couple light coats letting it dry in between coats. I had the black plastic parts on the door panels done as well.
I don't know if the pic will show the console well enough but it look 100% better after.
After thinking about it I rescued the part from the garbage (it was at the curb and they were picking up the morning). I'll remove what's left of the coating and see how it looks.
I'm pretty sure I got it from TLD. They have them still for $109, both in reproduction and genuine GM.
I suspect sitting for so long in contact with the bubble wrap caused the coating to fail. Or it was just a crapping coating.
Hey Joe... my 96 console is in need of some finish work also. A good project for this winter, so could you please explain the process you used on stripping the existing finish material.
I was considering the same result of a no "vinyl" finish. I imagine there may be a lot of us out here with the same console problems. Any advice would be appreciated... Thanks.

here's a couple threads that I did several years ago -
