I just finished my new display for my Corvette model car collection. I got the idea online and used an old grill from my 1990 Silverado Blazer. Slots were not quite wide enough so I added some little wooden extenders made from Masonite and covered with black sticky felt.
I've started a collection of 1/18 models of cars I've owned, and cars I'd like to own. So far I have (from right to left) The Bmw Isetta I had at 16, an XKE painted to match my Dad's 1970 (he offered it to me for Ł1200 in 1976 when I was 18. Why didn't I buy it??), the '93 vert we have now, the Mach 1 Mustang we had 25 years ago when they were cheap over here in the UK (she wanted a Trans Am - too expensive), and the '65 F100 I'd love to own for my gardening business ( I need a 1/18 weed-wacker and a mower to go in the back!).
I'm not sure if I can add a Mk 1 Mini, Bugeye Sprite, 1964 S Type Jag, 1967 Mk2 Jag, and a 1967 Jensen Interceptor without running out of room, or my wife leaving me......
For those of you thinking of making a shelf like this from a 1990 Silverado Blazer grill or one from some other year of vehicle, I extended each opening with a small wood shelf extender to provide more room for the cars. I made it with a 1/2" x 3 1/2" piece of thin paneling glued to a 1 3/8" x 3 1/2" piece of 1/8" Masonite. I also cut a small groove in it to fit tightly over the plastic reinforcing edge on the back of the grill. I made enough of these for each opening in the grill and after shoving them into place tightly in the groove, I hot melted them into place. Finally I covered them with a piece of black sticky felt. The extra thin piece of paneling glued on was to make the wood shelf extender level with the plastic ledge of the grill after attaching it to the bottom of the plastic ledge. Hope some of this info helps. It sure was a fun project, but the most fun was watching my wife arrange the models.
