Default New to C4s, Wheels Question

Hi everyone,

My grandfather has an '84 Vette (with 20k original miles) and still has the original tires on it. They have some dry rot, so we were looking at replacement tire options. We ended up looking at other possible wheels too since the OEM wheels aren't the best looking (sorry if you disagree ).

Anyway, we came across some that we really liked, but I just wanted to verify that they would fit since I'm having difficulty finding any info on the OEM wheel offset, width, fitment, etc. We were looking to run the following setup:

Front : 18x9.5 (+39 Offset) on 275/40/R18
Rear : 18x10.5 (+27 Offset) on 295/35/R18

Would these fit without rubbing and still remain in the wheel wells? Also, just to confirm, the bolt pattern is 5x120, right?

Sorry if I posted in the wrong forum, or if this is a duplicate - as I said, I couldn't find anything regarding fitment.

Thanks in advance!

The bolt circle is 120.65 OR 4.75 - there are people that have and will likely continue to "force fit" 120 BUT it's not correct and shouldn't be done.

The BMW guys have "force fit" the 120.65 on their stuff for years.

The fit of your offsets if they're available in 120.65 I can answer but didn't because you mentioned the 120 dimension.

Those "original tires" have to go now There's more than enough dry rot that it would be very dangerous to drive the car at even freeway speeds.

The OEM 9-1/2" wheel (at least in back) has a +38mm offset. So the 27mm offset will cause that wheel to sit 11mm further out but that should not be a problem. But you may see some rubbing at the top of the rear wheelwell given the wider wheel and tire. The 295 width will be about an inch wider than the original 255 tire. FWIW, a 275/40 tire is very close to the dimensions of the OEM 255/50 tire.

Check the diameter of the rear wheel/tire setup you are considering to make sure it doesn't impact the speedo and odometer reading. I have 275/40-17 tires on 9.5x17 wheels on my '87 and there is no real difference in the speedo value compared to the original 9.5x16 and 255-50-16 tires.

The front wheel at 39mm and the 275/40 tire should work OK.

The Chevrolet bolt pattern is actually 5x120.6 mm or 5x4-3/4". While that .6mm may not be a lot, you may find that the lug nuts will eventually cause some galling on the hole in the wheel where the lugs contact the wheel. Also, the OEM lug nuts have a 60 degree taper.

You may want to think about having the same size wheel and tire on all 4 corners. That way you can rotate the tires for longer tread life.

Actually with the 10.5 width I believe the wheel compared to an original 9.5 @ 38 will allow a couple mm more inside clearance BUT push the wheel outboard nearly 24mm. The tire of course needs to be considered but just the wheel offers up that for consideration.

An 11 @36 is right at or just beyond the wheel lip on the quarter so the 10.5@27 would be nearly 4mm further outboard.

Tires of course need to go as mentioned NOW

A base '84 would have 4 X 8.5 @32 I believe but I always use the max factory offering available when doing wheel/tire comparisons. I didn't consider tires "still" because I don't believe the bolt circle should be compromised. You need to buy tires and wheels, should cost a few $$'s - why buy a "force-fit"?

These will fit without spacers. You can ask your local tire shop which tires to install on them. 275-40-17 should work but check first.
