If you don't have a lot of time under your belt, with a paint gun in your hand, the more likely you will be OK with a less than $2,500 paint job
Lol I asked a local shop yesterday, in response to this thread, and he said I wont be leaving for less than $3-4k for a normal paintjob.

guys, I paint cars everyday for a living and am opening my own shop at home very soon. I would charge no less then $3500.00 . it's not as easy as you think. they don't come apart that easy. I take both bumpers off, fenders off, rockers off, rear hatch off, door handles and mirrors off, headlights out of hood, gas door off and all tail and side marker lights out. the front bumpers always have rock chips or and or paint cracks from flexing that have to be sanded and primed. all chips and scratches in the car have to be fixed right and primed. and spraying the car is not the easy part. if you don't know what your doing it will be a very expensive mistake. has anyone priced the materials? we use ppg. very expensive!!!
you have sand paper in different grits, primer, hardner, base coat, clear, clear hardner, and reducers. then there's sand paper to wet sand the entire car after painting and buffing pads. compound, and glaze. then there's the man hours. @ 100 or more to disassemble, prep, paint and reassemble and sand and buff. we bought 3 qts of color for our mixing system at work and it was over $700.00 and for a little bottle of ppg pearl... over $200.00 . to paint a car depending on the color you will spend @ $1000.00 on materials. prob more. that's why the price is so high. you can use cheaper materials to save money but the amount of work is still the same. we charge @ 6 to 8 grand for a paint job at work. here is a 69 chevelle I painted awhile back. if you can find a painter who does side work at home you should be able to get this kind of work for @ 4-5 grand. at a shop it would be @ 8 grand or more for the same thing. hope this helps.

I manage a body shop and I can also state that a decent repaint-not show quality by any stretch but simply what I would call decent drive able quality is going to run at least $ 3500.00 for a C4 vette and I am sure would be more like $ 5000.00 to get started. This is as stated earlier with just the basic bumper, handles etc. being removed with just a few normal flaws ( some chips and paint cracking etc. ) here and there to deal with.

The materials alone as stated can run as much as $1200.00 or more and this is average clear not the high end show quality clear. We do not even do complete repaints on older cars any longer because it ties up valuable space too long and simply does not generate the income we can generate from small to medium collision repairs.

I have no desire even working at a body shop to do a complete repaint on one of my own cars because I know first hand how much work it really is to repaint a car completely and correctly accounting for not only the time but cost in materials.
