Default Maf sensor issue

Hi guys was wondering if any of you could help me out with a maf issue. My car will not run with the maf plugged in. I unplug it and the car runs (not well but runs). Got any ideas? It's an 85 and the only code that's flashing is a maf code when it's unplugged. Should I just bite the bullet and buy a new maf? Already tried cleaning it with maf cleaner.

Look at the connector pins and use contact cleaner (if you have some) on them.

I chased a bad misfire on an s10 once for days. I replaced all the ignition components and still didn't go away, no codes were present other than random misfire. Unplugged the maf and problem disappeared so I went and bought new one and it was all good. Maybe try the local parts store and if it doesn't fix the problem tell them you never plugged it in and try to return it!

Good idea to replace the MAF relays as well.

Making sure to note the MAF relay and Burn Off relay are different.

don't bother. That's like changing the horn relay when you buy a new horn.

Lot's here just can't wait to throw money at their car replacing parts for no reason

'85s don't have MAF relays. They have a MAF burnoff module, which is located under the dash.

The two different relays (MAF power and MAF burnoff) was a one year only thing (1986). The two relays are the same for 1987 and later.
