Transmission Upper Console Trim Plate
My trim plate has a rubberized coating that i wearing off in spots (Ugly). This part is available but costly. Anyone know of a way to strip original coating and or resurfacing? It is a 1995 C-4 Auto.

They can be stripped but the original covering is no longer available. Some have tried the plastic dip spray stuff and others have glass beaded the smooth finish to try and match the color and texture of the coated plastic. A few have tried painting but success varies. Do a search on dash and or council repair or repaint.

There are threads on this very subject. Key point: get all of the old covering off first. What worked here was non-acetone fingernail polish remover, followed by a trip through the dishwasher (top shelf). A coat of -- Duplicolor, I think -- interior paint and it's visually new, although the color and touch aren't exactly like the original. A casual viewer would never suspect it's not original.

I soaked mine in dish detergent/water mix for about a half hour and it peeled right off. I then painted it with satin black. It isn't a dead match for the radio bezel but I really don't care. No one has mentioned it. Getting a 3 way match from the instrument cluster, radio bezel and shifter plate is damn near impossible. Sometimes you just have to compromise.
