Hello,
I have 86 convertible with issues. First something is draining the battery continuously. After two days it needs a charge. When I charge it up and drive many times it will not start after it is hot. It will "click" but not a starter engagement. If I jump it, it will start immediately just fine, unlike when a battery is dead or low and it cranks slowly or takes awhile to charge up the battery. It does not seem like the battery is dead. I tried to get under it the other day and after letting it cool for over an hour the starter was extremely hot. The rest of the engine was just warm. I've had times where it would take a second or two after turning the key to turn over and start when hot or cold. Sometimes it will just do nothing until I jump it when hot. I am a bit confused on why the starter, if that's the problem, would work fine when jumped though (when it's hot). I have had times when I've come home and shut it off and tried to start it and nothing. Then come back out the next day and it starts when cold. Could the battery drain when sitting be a bad starter issue too?
I've looked at replacing the starter myself and there are three lines in the way that looks like it would be difficult to drop it pass them. Does the heat shield stay in place when changing? The solenoid and connections are on top and are inaccessible unless the battery is dropped it seems.
I've read where people are putting smaller starters on to keep them away from the heat of the exhaust and for easier installation. Is this necessary or a good option?
I am always leery of jacking this car up too (I have no hoist) as to not damage the "X" frame.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Reason: wrong forum
mine went bad on my 86. had to fight and cuss to remove it. replaced it with a small starter from Summit. T think it was a hatachi style. Those lines go to the tranny and should move enough to allow you to get the starter out. Remember to take cable off battery first. Try taking the battery cable off over night. Years agoI had a 66 big block impala and starter was stuck in start position. It overheated as I drove it, ,caught fire and burned the car up. Fix this issue.
