Hello, I changed the starter in my nephews 95. After we finished we tried to start it up and it made a clanking sound. After a couple of times like that it started turning over. It seemed to be turning over kind of slow and wouldn't start. We tried jumping it because he had been trying to start it for the previous three days it was reading 12.8 volts at its best. At times it would turn over very slow and then speed up but it still seemed weak. It would make the clanking sound and not want to turn over. He would back off the key and would turn over again. Before the new starter it made a really loud clanking sound and would not turn over at all. I told him to take the battery to AZ and see if it is taking a charge. Anyone familiar with this. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Is this an A4 automatic? A very badly fractured "BUSTED" flywheel would maybe do as you describe.

yep, could be. They are only welded in a few spots around the ring gear. Not sure why it wouldn't crank over thou... unless it needs starter spacers but that's unlikely

If fractured I'd be more inclined to think the at the crankshaft mating flange and bolt mating surface. I don't believe I've ever seen a failure of the weld to the ring gear.
