Anyone know if there's a kit or ANYTHING I can replace my gear shift console with? My 94 coupe it's like a rubbery finish that is sticky to the touch and really just a dirt/dust attracter. It truly is horrible. Any input at all would be appreciated, also is it really involved to change it if there is something I can replace it with. I want to keep the car all original so will this effect that for a future statement of "all original". I have replaced the radio but I've kept the original equipment to return it back to stock someday if I should decide to sell it.
1) Live with it
2) Buy new repro replacements
3) Strip the coating off yourself and leave it that way
4) Strip the coating off and re-coat with something else (vinyl, paint, etc)
Not sure who, but one forum member used purple power to get off all the rubber coating and then painted to match the ret of the console. Looked really good, but he said it took a LONG time to get the coating off.
Stepps,
I just finished my console using Joe C’s method. I think it came out great, and I won’t have to deal with that Dulso crap... Check out my post just below for pictures.
I bought a gallon of purple power and a tub from walmart. I soaked the panel overnight and the Dulso fell off. Washed it, media blasted it, and use trim restorer as JoeC came up with. The best thing about this is there is no coating or paint to scrape off. I also did my radio surround panel and center vent.
The exterior window trim on C6s has a sort of rubbery coating on it and forum members said that RainX worked to get it off. I was skeptical, but it worked like a charm. I'm not sure if it's the same coating or not, but it might be worth a try. Didn't take much effort, and you wouldn't have to disassemble anything, just rub it on with a micro-fiber cloth.
By the way, I don't have access to my '91 right now and I haven't had it long enough to have noticed. I don't think it has the same coating, does it? It has the grey-ish panels that were used on the '90 and '91.
I have a new one to install, but decided to experiment on the one that my wife's dog scratched. (no more dog in the car). I took it out, cleaned it and sprayed it with spray on liquid black tape, as sold at Harbor Freight. Then I wiped it down with Armor All. It ended up creating a texture very close to the dash and isn't sticky. Eventually I will replace it, but for right now it alleviated the little bit of OCD that I have.
