The oil life monitor is good technology but in '95 it was based on a couple of formulas and driving habits. I would strongly suggest you change the oil at 5,000 miles or the end of the driving season, whichever comes first. When I park it for the winter it either gets a fresh change or the oil has less than 2,000 miles on it. You will get 100 different opinions on oil life, read them all and go with what you are comfortable.

I just paid $20 total in January for 5 qts of Mobil 1 and an AC pf454 oil filter with a price that cheap it doesn’t make much sense to push it and drive around with dirty oil cleaner oil also pays you back some at the pump with a couple more mpg over time and that is NO myth..

Or do some samples and stop guessing and telling yourself stories. Get the facts about your oil, in your car, with your driving. Validate the OLM with facts.

It WAS maybe the best. Past tense.

Or one oil analysis which is probably more valuable than the SWAGS.

Sure but 2 things. You forget to add the time to do the job from the start to finish. Also you neglect to mention what you consider "clean" and what the point of diminishing returns is. At what point does "clean" become meaningful enough to work on.

Couple of miles per gallon? Sounds like an ad.

Im pretty **** about keeping track of my mpg mainly from an efficiency standpoint I reset my avg mpg and trip on every fill-up been doing that in all of my cars for YEARS and use the Fuelly app on my phone In November I changed the oil in my C5 at 4800 miles and averaged 17.8 mpg the previous 2 tanks on the next 2 after fresh Mobil 1 it was 19.6 with pretty much the same driving style/speed and that was only at 4800 I’m sure if I would have pushed it past 7500 the improvement probably would have been more clean oil lubricates better than dirty oil that’s not debatable what’s not an exact science is WHEN clean oil becomes dirty there are lots of variables involved in that...

Huh. I use fuelly too. I also hand calc every tank and have for decades. Never seen the correlation that you're claiming to. I average 22-23 mpg in my 'Vette commuting to work and back. New oil or old. Same with all my other vehicles. Same-same mileage....new oil or old. Can't tell the diff.

I'd suggest doing a little more careful (controlled) testing.

I never used Fuely and certainly NOT the gauge. I just hand calculated. IDK what you mean by dirty since my oil is changed at the recommended mileage from Blackstone labs after doing a UOA. Dirty to me would be when it is due. Since I don't go past recommended intervals IDK if you consider it dirty at the end of the life but I have yet to notice much of a change. Even the Powerstroke that is HUEI isn't affected to that extent. Maybe more noisy in the cold and harder starts

All of our snow cats at work have C9 CAT engines that use HUEI (junk)...we don't see any change in performance from oil changes. Our oil samples show no degradation in the performance of the oil over the 250hr interval.

I want to thank everyone who has replied. As to popular advice I will be changing my oil about every 5,000 miles or less and to give it a new oil change before it goes to bed for the winter.

Thanks
